New bakery opens in downtown Marysville

Sep. 19—David and Denise Landis are making lots of sweet memories together as they embark on their newest endeavor, a new bakery in historic downtown Marysville.

The married couple opened Edible Memories Bakery in 2016, originally operating out of their home and then in a shop at Hillcrest Plaza in Yuba City. They returned to their at-home business model during the COVID-19 pandemic but were keen on reopening at a location with a bit more foot traffic.

Once they showed interest in Marysville, Dan Flores, Marysville's community development director, gave them the lay of the land and they ended up settling on the first property they toured.

"I really felt connected to it. The location was good and the brick front had a really nice feel," said Denise Landis. "This is, I think, the perfect area for a bakery. Marysville has so much history and it's just beautiful. We've done exceptionally well this past week, everybody's just been so nice and welcoming."

The Landis' have deep roots in the community having both grown up between Yuba City and Marysville. In fact, David Landis' grandmother used to work at Scott's Ideal Bakery off D Street, right around the corner from Edible Memories' new home at 321 Third St. in Marysville.

"I remember helping my grandma a lot when I was young and spent a lot of time in the kitchen over those years and really enjoyed it," added Landis.

Landis worked a variety of local jobs and even has a degree in communications. His true passion, however, lies in baking. He met Denise Landis at church while still working in construction and the two soon found themselves smitten with their mutual love for food. Denise Landis went to culinary school and worked at several notable companies such as Great Harvest, The Cake Lady, and Gold Country Casino. It was there at the casino that she showed off one of her giant totem pole cakes to David Landis and expressed her true desire to someday own and operate a bakery.

"I was amazed by it. I knew she did baking, but I didn't know it was on this caliber," said David Landis. "It was like the stuff you see on TV with all the detail and it was as big as she was! Needless to say, I was impressed."

They were married just a few months later in March of 2016 and launched Edible Memories that same month. Not surprisingly, a large portion of their income comes from catering weddings and other special events. For this reason Denise Landis hopes to soon open a bridal room next door to support cake tasting and consultations for prospective couples. In the meantime, their Marsyville storefront serves guests from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Some of their top selling items include ham and cheese croissants, brownies, cinnamon rolls, cheesecake, and sourdough rolls. As far as cakes go, their in-store options currently include German chocolate, carrot, and berry chantilly.

"When we first started dating, the first thing I ever made him was blueberry cheesecake and he learned how to make it just based off that," laughed Denise Landis. "He's actually better at it now than I am."

In addition to desserts and pastries, the couple also sells various plants and cuttings and hopes to include more greenery throughout the store as they settle in. Plans to develop a cafe dining area are already in the works as are conversations with potential partners such as local bread makers and coffee producers.

"I've always wanted a little breakfast joint," said David Landis. "I like when older folks come in and tell their stories. As a little boy, my grandpa used to take me to Scott's and different places like that and those were some of the best times of my life, getting to spend time with my grandpa and his brothers and enjoy that comradery."

David Landis, once a construction worker and now the constructor of cakes, focuses on the baking and interior design of the shop while Denise Landis takes over cake decorating and management. They celebrated Edible Memories Bakery's soft opening last week and plan to host their official grand opening ribbon cutting ceremony with the Yuba-Sutter Chamber of Commerce in November.

Together, David and Denise Landis look forward to serving Marysville and the surrounding community and hope their story will encourage others to seek out their passions and invest in this up-and-coming district.
