After baking together and starting a home-based business during the pandemic, a mother-daughter duo are planning on opening Matilda Bakehouse in Fox Point.

If they get the approval of the village board on Sept. 12, Julie Howard and her daughter Allie Fisher are planning on opening the bakery on North Santa Monica Boulevard on Feb. 1, 2024.

The location in Fox Point would be Matilda Bakehouse's first brick-and-mortar location.

"We are very excited to be in Fox Point and to have a place to call home," said Howard.

Howard said Fisher, who graduated from the French Pastry School in Chicago in 2009 and has been baking professionally since, will be the pastry chef.

What kind of baked goods will they be selling at Matilda Bakehouse?

Howard said their products at Matilda Bakehouse will feature a lot of French baking. She said that croissants and danishes will be very popular. She said that the croissants can be stuffed with different kinds of fillings and topped with frosting.

"We can change the flavor each week," said Howard. She said flavors include lemon meringue, salted chocolate caramel and strawberry. She said they could have lunch-style croissants which would include ham and cheese and pesto mozzarella and tomato.

She also said they expect to sell cinnamon knots ― cinnamon rolls that are braided, knotted and iced.

She also said people will see a selection of cookies. One would be a shortbread cookie with confetti. She said they would also offer cakes.

Will they sell anything else besides baked goods?

Howard said they plan on selling Anodyne Coffee, which would include iced coffee and espresso products.

How many people can dine inside the new location?

There is indoor seating with tables for about 30 to 34 people. There is also a gathering room that can be reserved for meetings, gatherings or classes.

How big will the bakery be?

The bakery will be 2,400 square feet.

What kind of classes will be at the bakery?

Since there will be no kitchen, Howard said there may be potential classes in cake or cookie decoration. Nothing is planned yet, she said.

Will there be outdoor seating?

There will not be outdoor seating as there is not really a place for that, said Howard. But Howard said there will most likely be a bench in front of the bakery.

What will its hours be?

According to village documents, the bakery's hours are slated for 6 a.m. to 4 p.m. But Howard told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that the hours will most likely be adjusted, with a likely opening time between 6:30 and 7 a.m. and a closing time of 3 to 4 p.m.

What is its address?

The address is 6870-6874 N. Santa Monica Blvd. in Fox Point.
