New Balance, local retailer named footwear & gear supplier of Detroit Free Press Marathon
The Detroit Free Press Marathon has announced its footwear sponsor for this year's race.
For the 14th consecutive year, New Balance will be the official brand of the 2022 Marathon, the race announced Wednesday.
“We’re thrilled to continue our partnership with New Balance, the premier performance running apparel and shoe brand in the industry,” said Aaron Velthoven, vice president and executive producer of the Detroit Free Press Marathon.
The branded Marathon gear will include a variety of clothing, including windbreakers, sweatshirts, hats and more.
In the same announcement, Running Lab, a retailer based in Brighton that specializes in running and walking shoes, has been tabbed as the exclusive distributor of marathon-connected merchandise. This is the first year Running Lab is partnering with the race.
“We are so excited to deliver some new ideas to the merchandise and strengthen the partnership between DFPM and New Balance,” said Ken Larscheid, owner of Running Lab. “We cannot wait to show everyone all the things we have planned for 2022 and beyond.”

Official clothing designs for this year's race will be unveiled in the coming months, and all race participants will receive performance shirts after they register. Registration is still open.
The weekend-long event — which is expecting more than 20,000 runners for the 45th annual race weekend, Oct. 14-16 — will include a number of races: the full marathon, five-person marathon relay, the international half marathon and the U.S. half-marathon.
The 2021 event was the third time in race history the routes stayed in the US only, though the plan is to cross international borders twice, from Detroit to Windsor and back, again this year.
The specifics of the re-designed marathon course, which will have the most significant update since the first race in 1978, will be announced next week.
