Baldwin County beach communities bring in $880 million from tourism in 2023

BALDWIN COUNTY, Ala. (WKRG) — Record retail sales topping $1.4 billion and almost full occupancy in 2023 for south Baldwin County beach communities.

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach Tourism CEO Beth Gendler said the past few years have been very successful.

“We were within 1% of the record-breaking year of ’22, which was up 7%, which was up 48%, over the year before, so we were thrilled to make those numbers,” Gendler said. “Lots of visitors kept coming to the beach, which we are always so thankful for.”

Overall, visitors spent more than $880 million on lodging, making it about 80% occupancy through the tourism season.

Gendler said Orange Beach, Gulf Shores and Fort Morgan are all on track to have a successful 2024 tourism season.

“February, we are running over 70% that’s occupied, so lots and lots of winner visitors and the forecast through April,” Gendler said. “Easter is really early this year so a little strange with the way Easter falls with spring break, but March and April together look very good, so the first quarter of the year looks really strong.”
