With six candidates, Norwalk voters picked three — Kate Baldwin, incumbent Michelle Kelly and Jacob Heuser — to sit on the board that guides the fast-growing, 3,500-student school district.

Unofficial Warren County election total Tuesday showed Heuser's 832 votes edged out Daniel Doerfler, who snagged 831 votes. Both won 18% of the vote.

Baldwin was the top vote-getter with 20% of the 4,527 votes and Kelly received 19%, unofficial results show.

Baldwin told the Des Moines Register that Norwalk's five-member School Board needs to plan for short- and long-term growth challenges. She also said staff, parents and community members must be part of the board's planning efforts.

With nearly 20 years working in higher education, Heuser said he's got the experience needed to plan for growth. Don Cook said he does as well, with roughly 30 years in the agricultural seed industry.

Emily Blom, an avid parent volunteer, said she's worked side-by-side with teachers and staff, giving her insight into the district's needs. And Kelly said she wants to continue serving the staff, students and community.
