Baldwin police confirm multiple brush fires were accidental

Baldwin Borough police said multiple brush fires that were originally believed to be intentional have been confirmed to be accidental.

The department said they were dispatched to six scenes within minutes of each other, starting at 12:11 p.m. Tuesday.

Police and the Bureau of Forestry thoroughly investigated and determined the fires were caused by a diesel particulate filter, or “DPF,” which is commonly found on vehicles with diesel engines.

Vehicles with DPF systems could potentially ignite dry vegetation due to extreme heat in the exhaust system.

The fires took place on or near the following roads:

  • Willett Road (Brentwood and Baldwin sections)

  • Schuette Road

  • Brentwood Road

  • Streets Run Road (from Brentwood Road to Delwar Road)

  • Delwar Road (in West Mifflin)
