Ball and Graves move into first-place tie at Bentwood golf tourney

Two-time champions Jason Ball and Jack Graves shot a 3-under par 69 to move into a first-place tie with Patrick Box and Cade Custer after the second round of the Bentwood Country Club Men's Partnership golf tournament on Saturday.

Ball and Graves (70-69--139), who have won the title two of the last three years, trimmed a shot off Friday's opening round. Ball is a former San Angelo Central High School golfer.

Box and Custer (67-72--139) had to settle for par after shooting five strokes higher than their first-round score.

"Man, it didn't have a lot to do with me," Graves said of moving into a tie for first. "Jason played really well all day. I helped very little. Jason's really good. We missed some putts, but we made a few that mattered in the end. We're looking forward to (Sunday)."

If not for a second-place finish last year, Ball and Graves would be shooting for a fourth-consecutive championship.

Graves talked about how the course is looking this time around during what's been a brutally hot West Texas summer.

"With no more rain than we've had, I think Bentwood's done a phenomenal job," he said. "That's as good as I've seen it in a long time. They set it up tough and it's been tough, but the tournament's been great. Everything about it's been great so far."

And they're hoping to work their magic again on Sunday.

"It would mean a lot to me," Graves said. "Honestly, I'm probably the worst player in the flight. All these guys are (former) college golfers and I'm not. For me to win again with Jason, and Jason is very talented, it would mean a lot because all these guys are better than me. They're all good, and I'm decent at times, I guess."

Central head football coach Kevin Crane and Murray Carson are just two shots back (69-72--141) heading into Sunday.

Mark Vega and Tyler Ware (76-66--142) had the best round of the day in the Championship Flight, as they moved within three shots of the co-leaders. Ware is trying to win the tourney for the second-straight year after taking the 2021 title with former partner Zachery Murphy.

The Championship Flight will begin teeing off at 2 p.m. on the No. 1 hole Sunday, and the co-leaders are scheduled to start at 2:30 p.m.
