Ball State women's tennis season ends, BSU baseball keeps rolling, prep results and more

MUNCIE, Ind. — Ball State's women's tennis team saw another season come to an end in the first round of the NCAA Tournament.

The Cardinals, who advanced to their second-straight NCAA Tournament, were tasked with playing No. 4 Texas. The Longhorns were the reigning national champions. Ball State (19-5) fell to Texas (21-4) by a 4-0 final.

The Longhorns' No. 1 doubles team of Peyton Stearns/Allura Zamarripa defeated Ball State's Amy Kaplan/Hannah Davies 6-4 while their No. 2 doubles team of Kylie Collins/Charlotte Chavatipon took down Mariya Polishchuk/Emma Peeler 6-0.

In singles action, Ball State's Kaplan (6-1, 6-1), Davies (6-0, 6-1) and Livia Lukacs (6-1, 6-0), lost at No. 3, No. 4 and No. 5 singles, respectively.

The loss marched the end to another successful season for the Cardinals. 2022 marked the third time in six NCAA Tournaments in which they represented the Mid-American Conference. In his tenure, head coach Max Norris had guided Ball State to four MAC regular season titles (2016, 2017, 2021 and 2022) and two tournament championships (2016, 2022).

Ball State baseball keeps rolling

Ball State's baseball team (32-14, 26-4 MAC) is rolling in the final weeks of the regular season.

After sweeping Central Michigan to take the No. 1 spot in the Mid-American Conference standings last weekend, the Cardinals traveled to Kent State and beat the Golden Flashes in another weekend series.

The Cardinals opened up the weekend with a 12-0, seven-inning, win on Saturday and followed it up with a pair of wins on Sunday.

As of Monday morning, Ball State ranked No. 14 in Collegiate Baseball's NCAA Division I baseball poll and No. 71 in the NCAA's RPI rankings.

Isaacson, Mandilaris earn more postseason recognition

Ball State men's volleyball players Quinn Isaacson and Angelos Mandilaris earned more postseason recognition this week.

Off the Block gave Isaacson the Lloy Ball Award and Mandilaris the Bryan Ivie Award. The awards are given to the nation's top setter and top opposite, respectively.

Ball State softball ends season at Akron

Ball State (22-31, 15-14 MAC) ended its 2022 season at Akron. The Cardinals finished fifth in the MAC Standings, just outside of the cutoff to compete in the MAC Tournament.

After dropping the first game 6-0, Ball State beat Akron 6-3 and 2-0. During its first win, the Cardinals had six different players record at least one hit and five record one RBI. In the second win, Ball State was led by Amaia Daniel (two hits, one RBI). Angelina Russo (11 IP, 7 H, 2 ER, 3 Ks) earned both wins in the circle.

Joey Ranieri earns All-MAC Second Team nod

Ball State men's golfer Joey Ranieri was named an All-MAC Second Team selection. Ranieri was an All-MAC Second Team pick in 2021 and was named the MAC Freshman of the Year in 2019.

This season, he averaged a team-best 72.64 strokes per round, recording four top-10 finishes and 14 rounds of even par or better.

Yorktown's Clay Kruger commits to Earlham College

Yorktown boys soccer player Clay Kruger signed his national letter or intent to continue his academic and athletic career at Earlham College. In four seasons, Kruger played 54 games for the Tigers. As a senior, he scored 38 points (15 goals, eight assists) for the sectional champions.

Todd Grace named Muncie Central's girls basketball coach

Muncie Central athletics announced it has selected Todd Grace as its next girls basketball coach.

High school track and field

Delta sweeps Delaware County championship

Delta's girls and boys track and field teams swept the 2022 Delaware County championships. The Eagles' girls scored 165 points to top Yorktown (133), Wapahani (69), Daleville (47), Wes-Del (28) and Cowan (18) while the Eagles' boys scored 166 to beat Wapahani (133), Yorktown (112), Cowan (35), Daleville (11) and Wes-Del (5).

In the boys' events, winners included Delta's 4x100-meter relay team, 4x400m relay team, Quinn Backus (100m, 200m), Tyler Dillon (1,600m), Johnathan Chimbanda (300m hurdles), Dylan Manor (shot put) and Abram Stitt (long jump), Cowan's Kyle Pike (400m), Wapahani's Nick Cook (800m), Drayden Gates (110m hurdles), 4x800m relay team and Alden Mahaffey (high jump) along with Yorktown's Luke Harber (3,200m) and Mason Moulton (discus)

In the girls' events, winners included Cowan's Madilyn Howell (100m), Yorktown's 4x100 relay team, Brooke Miles (200m), Gretchen Moore (shot put) and Taylor Fletcher-Douglas (discus), Delta's 4x400 and 4x800 relay teams, Sarah Bohanon (400m), Nicki Southerland (800m, 1,600m, 3,200m) and Kendra Keesling (100m hurdles, 300m hurdles, long jump) along with Wapahani's Amya Carr (high jump).

Muncie Burris sweeps Pioneer titles

Muncie Burris swept the Pioneer track and field titles. The boys scored 103.5 points while the girls scored 124.

In the boys' events, individual winners for the Owls included Daryle Riegle (pole vault) and Dylan Ward (shot put, discus). In the girls' events, the 4x800 relay team and the 4x400 relay team finished first.

High school baseball

Monroe Central wins Randolph County title

Monroe Central defeated Winchester 5-1 in the first game and Union City 10-0 in the championship to win the Randolph County title.

Harrison defeats Muncie Central

Muncie Central lost to Harrison 21-0.

Eastbrook beats Cowan

Cowan lost to Eastbrook 4-3. The Blackhawks were led by Jackson Clifford (two hitS), Chase Smith (one hit, one RBI), Austin Jones (one hit, one RBI) and Gentry Groves (one hit, one RBI).

Wes-Del beats Elwood

Wes-Del defeated Elwood 15-0. The Warriors were led by Travis Bunch (three hits, five RBIs), Kade Banter (two hits, two RBIs) and Grayson Mealy (two hits, three RBIs).

High school softball

Union City tops Winchester for Randolph County title

Union City defeated Winchester 18-16 to claim the Randolph County Championship. The Golden Falcons beat Monroe Central (13-10) to advance to the finals.

In the semifinal, Winchester was led by Gena Moore (four hits, six RBIs), Allie Campbell (three hits, one RBI) and Taylor Campbell (three hits, two RBIs). Monroe Central was led by Lydia Price (three hits, two RBIs), Alex McGrath (three hits) and Tessa Chesher (two hits, three RBIs).

Jay County finished 3rd at Elwood Tournament

Jay County finished third at the Elwood Tournament. The Patriots beat Southwood 12-1 but fell to Elwood 5-1.

Shenandoah wins Henry County Tournament

Shenandoah won the Henry County softball championship, beating Blue River 21-0 in five innings in the first game before topping Knightstown 9-0 in the championship.

High school boys golf

Yorktown finishes 2nd at Batesville Invite

Yorktown shot a 337 to finish second at the Batesville Invite.

High school girls tennis

Pendleton Heights tops Yorktown

Yorktown lost to Pendleton Heights 3-2. The Tigers saw wins at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.

Blue River wins Henry County Tournament

Blue River won the Henry County Tournament. Individually, Tara Jarvis (No. 2 singles), Kearsten Perdue (No. 3 singles) and Samantha Webb/Jenna Willis (No. 1 doubles) won county championships for the Vikings.

Winchester finishes 2nd in Randolph County Tournament

Winchester finished second in the Randolph County Tournament, losing to Randolph Southern but beating Union City. Morgan Lawrence and Mackenzie Meadows were county champions at No. 2 doubles for the Golden Falcons.
