Baltimore County man charged in death of Harford County child

A Baltimore County man has been arrested in connection with the death of a 3-year-old girl who died Friday in Belcamp.

Randolph James Mack, 43, was taken into custody at his Essex home without incident Saturday, according to a news release from the Harford County Sheriff’s Office. Mack was known to the child. Authorities are trying to determine a motive in her death, the sheriff’s office said.

Mack is charged with first-degree murder, first-degree assault and child abuse, according to district court records. He is being held without bail at the Harford County Detention Center. A preliminary hearing will be held June 30.

According to the sheriff’s office, deputies assigned to the Southern Precinct responded to a home on the 1200 block of Ashmead Square shortly after 11 p.m. Friday after receiving a report of a juvenile in cardiac arrest. When deputies arrived, medics were in the living room trying to save the girl’s life. The child was transported to Upper Chesapeake Medical Center where she was pronounced dead at 11:58 p.m. Medics and medical staff told deputies the girl had “suspicious bruising” consistent with child abuse, the sheriff’s office said.

The girl’s identity, along with the cause and manner of her death, have not been released. The agency said the investigation is ongoing.

Anyone with information on the girl’s death is asked to contact Det. S. Moro from the agency’s Criminal Investigations Division at 443-409-3154.
