‘Sad, isn’t it?’ Man in critical condition after being shot in head Tuesday night in East Baltimore

A man was shot in the head in the Gay Street neighborhood in East Baltimore, police said Tuesday night.

Eastern District officers responded to the 900 block of North Caroline Street around 8:20 p.m. for a shooting, Baltimore Police said in a news release.

Upon arrival, officers located an unknown man who was suffering from a gunshot wound to his head. The victim was taken to a hospital and is in critical condition, the release said.

Due to the severity of the victim’s injuries, homicide detectives were notified and have assumed control of the investigation.

By 8:45 p.m., police had roped off the block of Ashland Avenue between North Caroline and North Bond Street, as well as most of the parking lot of Church Square Shopping Center, a strip mall that includes a Hip Hop Fish and Chicken and a Dollar General.

Although other nearby businesses still open Tuesday night closed early, Paradise Nails owner Thuy Le was still inside her nail salon at 9 p.m., applying a final customer’s eyelashes behind a locked door.

Le pointed to the parking lot outside, where she said she saw the shooter flee past her truck toward North Caroline. She said there were many bystanders present when the shooting took place.

“Sad, isn’t it?” Le said. “I’m so hurt. Hurt and scared.”

Tuesday’s shooting was not the first at the strip mall this year. On Jan. 10, 25-year-old Darrian Carr was killed in a shooting in the 900 block of North Caroline. Le said someone was shot in her salon on that date when a bullet traveled through the window.

“That’s why my nerves have been so bad,” Le said. Since then, she has put an image of Jesus Christ on the inside of the salon’s front window as a form of protection. Le said that shooting also scared away customers, hurting her business.
