Former Missouri running back Tyler Badie was selected 196th overall by the Baltimore Ravens in the sixth round of the NFL Draft on Saturday.

Badie was the second Missouri player taken in the draft, held in Las Vegas. Akayleb Evans was selected in the fourth round by the Minnesota Vikings.

Badie spent much of his childhood in the Baltimore suburb of Randallstown, Maryland, before graduating high school from Briarcrest Christian School in Memphis, Tennessee.

He will join a crowded Ravens backfield that includes JK Dobbins, Gus Edwards and Justice Hill.

The pick came after his 2021 season, where he set a MU program record for rushing yards in a single season with 1,604 yards on 268 attempts, good for an average of 6.0 yards per carry.

Badie led the SEC in rushing yards as well as yards from scrimmage and total touchdowns (18) in 2021. He added 330 receiving yards to his rushing totals.

The running back declared for the NFL Draft in December, forgoing his final year at Missouri.

“Being a student-athlete at Missouri has given me the memories of a lifetime,” Badie said in a statement revealing his intentions to enter the draft. “Having the opportunity to earn my degree and share this journey with my family, teammates, staff and fans is not something I’ll ever take for granted.”

He finished third in the Football Bowl Subdivision in rushing yards, earning second-team All-American honors in the process. He missed Missouri’s appearance in the Armed Forces Bowl after being held out of the game by the Tiger coaching staff.

The back cemented his place as the Tigers’ main option ahead of the 2021 campaign. He had previously worked in tandem with Larry Rountree. Badie racked up 2,740 rushing yards throughout his Missouri career.

At the NFL Combine in Indianapolis in March, Badie ran a 4.45-second 40-yard dash. He also broad jumped 121 inches and showed a 33.5-inch vertical.

Badie stands 5-foot-8 and weighs in at 197 pounds. He was projected to be selected anywhere between the third to sixth round ahead of the draft.

The back was praised for his ability to perform as a three-down back, as well as his ability to make plays out of the backfield as a passing threat. He took on a massive workload in 2021 and played well.

Badie was also praised for his ball security. He lost just two fumbles on 513 carries.

Knocks against Badie were largely due to a perceived weakness in short-yardage situations and pass blocking.

Badie made the SEC all-freshman team his first season in Columbia.

Training camps for NFL teams begin in mid to late July. The preseason is set to start on Aug. 4, and the regular-season schedule will be released on May 12.
