10 death row inmates in Oklahoma could get new trials
As many as 10 death row inmates in Oklahoma, more than one-fifth of the state’s prisoners condemned to die, could escape execution because of a recent U.S. Supreme Court ruling concerning criminal jurisdiction in Indian Country. The inmates have challenged their convictions in state court following the high court’s ruling last year, dubbed the McGirt decision, that determined a large swath of eastern Oklahoma remains an American Indian reservation. The decision means that Oklahoma prosecutors lack the authority to pursue criminal charges in cases in which the defendants, or the victims, are tribal citizens.

Space junk burns in sky over Queensland, Australia
Videos obtained by Reuters showed streaks and bright sparks where the apparent space debris had burnt up. The Australian Broadcasting Corporation reported that the debris was from a Chinese Long March rocket. Reuters could not immediately independently confirm the reports."I thought it was a meteorite at first but later as it split, my mate and I began thinking it was space junk," said Jasper Nash, who filmed one of the videos. "It was very fascinating."A growing amount of broken satellites and spent rocket parts has raised concerns over congestion, which increases the risk of collisions in space that can cause serious damage to spacecraft.

Biden: Strikes in Syria sent warning to Iran to 'be careful'
President Joe Biden said Friday that Iran should view his decision to authorize U.S. airstrikes in Syria as a warning that it can expect consequences for its support of militia groups that threaten U.S. interests or personnel. Administration officials defended the Thursday night airstrikes as legal and appropriate, saying they took out facilities that housed valuable “capabilities” used by Iranian-backed militia groups to attack American and allied forces in Iraq.

Biden brings empathy to storm-battered Texas, security official lays out state's mistakes
U.S. President Joe Biden met with volunteers at a food bank, toured a health center and visited an emergency operations facility on Friday to assess recovery efforts from a severe Texas winter storm while an aide blamed state government for being unprepared. Biden and his wife Jill Biden landed in Houston where he met Republican Governor Greg Abbott and Houston Mayor Sylvester Turner to discuss the recovery from last week’s storm, which caused serious damage to homes and businesses, left millions without power or clean water for days, and killed at least two dozen. At the Houston Food Bank, the largest in the country serving more than 1.1 million people, Biden saw rows of packaged food, from pasta to applesauce, stacked in a large warehouse and watched conveyors move slowly as volunteers pulled food out of boxes and put them in containers for delivery.

Trump's hold on Republican Party on display at CPAC
Donald Trump's hold on the Republican Party will be on full display this weekend at the Conservative Political Action Conference - or CPAC - in Orlando, Florida. The twice-impeached one-term former president, who is speaking Sunday, is expected to chart a future for a party split on the way forward after his chaotic four years in office. On Friday prominent congressional conservatives like Senator Ted Cruz defended Trump’s central place in the party, glossing over the role he played in the deadly riots at the Capitol on January 6th. SEN. TED CRUZ: "And they look at Donald J. Trump and they look at the millions and millions of people inspired, who went to battle fighting alongside President Trump, and they're terrified! And they want him to go away. Let me tell you this right now: Donald J. Trump ain't going anywhere."In his speech Sunday, Trump is expected to dangle the possibility of running for president again in 2024. Senator Lindsey Graham, one of Trump’s closest allies in Congress, told reporters in the Capitol that he expected the former president to talk about his policy achievements, but added that it "would be a big mistake" if he focused on the past election. Trump's tumultuous final weeks in office saw his supporters launch the deadly attack on the U.S. Capitol in an attempt to block Congress from certifying Biden's election victory, a win that Trump falsely claimed was tainted by widespread fraud. That same false narrative continued to echo at the conference Friday.DEROY MURDOCK: "So don't tell me that vote fraud is some right-wing hallucination. The November 2020 election was a nightmare." Now tension is building within the GOP on whether or not Trump should play a role in the future of the party. On Wednesday, that clash was on full display between Republican House Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy and Representative Liz Cheney, the No. 3 Republican in the House who voted to impeach Trump last month. A reporter asked if Trump should speak at CPAC.REP. KEVIN MCCARTHY: "Yes, he should,"REP. LIZ CHENEY: “That's up to CPAC. I've been clear in my views on President Trump and the extent to which fell on January 6th, I don't believe that he should be playing a role in the future of the party or the country."

Lady Gaga poised to hand over $500,000 reward to mystery woman after safe return of Bulldogs
Lady Gaga is poised to hand over a $500,000 reward to a mystery woman who returned her beloved French bulldogs kidnapped in a violent street robbery near her home in Hollywood. Koji and Gustav, thought to be worth up to $10,000 dollars each, were given in at a downtown LAPD Police Station by an unnamed woman late on Friday night. Authorities believe the woman who handed the dogs in was "uninvolved and unassociated" with the attack - but she is still eligible for the "unconditional" $500,000 and is said to be in contact with Gaga’s representatives. “If you bought or found them unknowingly, the reward is the same,” Gaga had said in a post confirming the hefty sum before the dogs were handed back on Friday. The violent abduction on Wednesday saw the singer’s dog-walker and close friend Ryan Fischer shot in the chest. Gaga's third dog named Miss Asia escaped the attack and was later found by police. The singer, whose real name is Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta, has kept silent since the dogs were handed into police. But her reward offer has raised eyebrows.
