The banh mi is back! Here’s when Le’s Sandwiches will reopen at its new Charlotte location
After nearly a year, Le’s Sandwiches is on its way back in Charlotte. The banh mi shop is planning its reopening for Saturday, Oct. 14.
Longtime fans of the family-owned sandwich shop can soon reminisce about navigating the potholes at Asian Corner Mall on as they pull into the sleek new space developed by Beauxwright across the parking lot from the original location. The restaurant operated inside the mall from 2004 until the property was shuttered in early January.
Owners Minh Quang Nguyen and Le Thi Le-Nguyen had originally put the restaurant up for sale to make way for retirement. But those plans changed as their son, Tuan Nguyen, decided to take over with the continued help of his parents — and they began the process of moving to a new space nearby.
Outside Le’s new building, a bright floral mural from Asheville artist Kathryn Crawford not only adds color to the space, but also nods to the restaurant’s past.
“The flowers are a representation of the different Asian communities that were a part of the Asian Corner Mall that we wanted to pay tribute to,” a post on the restaurant’s Instagram account said.
Step inside, and you’ll find handwoven Vietnamese baskets decorating the walls, along with photographs (including the three from CharlotteFive photographer Alex Cason), artwork, magazine articles and other nods to its previous home.
And the menu? You’ll still be able to savor a banh mi with Vietnamese cold cuts or lemongrass grilled pork with Vietnamese mayonnaise, pickled carrots, daikon, fresh jalapeños and cilantro.
