Banner plans $400M medical center here

Apr. 6—It looks like a sprawling space in North Scottsdale will "flip" from art to medicine.

The fast-growing Banner Health is planning a medical center on 48 acres near Hayden Road and the Loop 101 in North Scottsdale.

According to the city, the site is at 18400 N. Hayden Road, currently occupied by Celebration of Fine Art, which has "40,000 square feet of working studios for 100 renowned and emerging artists from across the country," according to its website.

The art center did not respond to a request about its future plans.

According to David Lozano, a Banner spokesman, for the planned Banner Scottsdale Medical Center, "we are purchasing from an entity owned by Van Tuyl Companies and DeRito Partners."

Banner hopes to open the facility in 2026, bringing some 2,500 jobs — and access for thousands of patients.

According to a Banner press release, the $400 million project will include an acute care hospital, adjacent medical office building and a cancer center.

An open house regarding a zoning and development request for the Banner project was held March 29. Banner is requesting a change from planned community district to special campus zoning for the hospital medical campus.

Banner said the center "will be a full-service, destination hospital with a focus on key areas of distinction for Banner, including cardiovascular, orthopedics, cancer and neuroscience programs."

Banner noted the Northeast Valley population is projected to grow by more than 17% in the coming decade.

"Our strategic growth plan is focused on convenience and access, with facilities close to home for our patients, members and their families," said Scott Nordlund, chief strategy and growth officer for Banner Health. "Scottsdale is a natural growth area for Banner."

Plans call for a four-story, 384,000-square foot Banner Scottsdale Medical Center with 120 patient beds.

Banner says the center will have 1,000 health care jobs over the next five years and employ 2,500 at "full development."

Banner Health has been expanding widely across the Valley in the last few years.

Banner Ocotillo Medical Center in Chandler, which opened in November 2020, was Banner's 13th hospital in the metro Phoenix market.

After opening Banner Health Center plus in the Arcadia neighborhood at 44th Street and Camelback, the company plans to open Banner Sports Medicine Scottsdale, off the Loop 101 near Talking Stick and Dobson roads, next month.
