Banquete ISD head football coach/AD Kevin Hermes to take new role within district

Kevin Hermes has spent nearly all of his professional career working in athletics in Banquete ISD.

Later this summer, Hermes will take on a new role within the district, ending a nearly two-decade tenure as head football coach and athletic director. Hermes confirmed on Monday that he will step down from both positions to take a job as an elementary school assistant principal within Banquete ISD, beginning a new phase in his career in education.

Hermes, 48, started as an assistant coach at Banquete in 1998. He took over as head football coach and athletic director in 2003 and has served in those roles ever since.

"It's something I've thought about for several years, moving full-time into the administration side and this opportunity came up," Hermes said when reached on his cell phone Monday. "It was tough for me to pass up."

Hermes added he was putting his family first in the decision as he has two children, one in college and another one who will be a freshman this coming school year.

"It's extremely tough, I love our kids, I love the way they work and being on the sidelines and being on the field with the kids," Hermes said. "But I'm really excited about continuing to serve the district in a different manner and remaining with the Banquete ISD community."

Hermes, a native of Yoakum, compiled a 101-101 record during 19 seasons leading the Banquete football program, and made the playoffs in 13 seasons, including the 2021 season. The Bulldogs finished 6-5 in Class 3A Division II in 2021.

The Bulldogs' best season under Hermes was 2012 when they finished 10-2.

Hermes also has served as the head softball coach the past few seasons, leading the Bulldogs to the Region IV-3A final in 2019. Hermes said his first job at Banquete was as a junior high teacher, along with coaching cross country, football and baseball.

"I've always thought of Banquete as a hardworking group of kids that get after it on the football field, get after it on the baseball field, on the softball field, on the court," Hermes said. "It's a great community, great parents and that's what I've loved about it all these years."

Hermes said he will switch over into his new position officially on July 1. He said he will help with the transition for the new football coach and athletic director as well.

"I like the challenge professionally," Hermes said. "I've done one thing all my life, and I look forward to a new challenge that's in front of me."
