On Monday, US President Barack Obama sent his first tweet from his new Twitter handle, @POTUS.
Having previously send sporadic signed tweets from the accounts @BarackObama and @WhiteHouse, Obama now has his own official, verified account, @POTUS (which stands for President of the United States).
In his very first tweet, the President wrote, "Hello, Twitter! It's Barack. Really! Six years in, they're finally giving me my own account."
The White House confirmed the account with a tweet of its own: "BREAKING: President Obama just launched @POTUS with a tweet from the Oval Office. It's really him! #WelcomeToTwitter."
Within an hour of his first tweet the account already had 250,000 followers.
