With a view of the current White House, it's easy to mourn the days of '44'. Ain't no sunshine when he's gone, and all that. Although, it turns out that there is. While millions have spent the last three-and-a-bit years in a long, angry political winter, it's summer every day for the former president. He's got the shades to prove it.

Recently pictured in the crisp autumn light of New York City, the former POTUS donned shades perfect for summer. And autumn. And winter. And the next summer too, to be honest. For Wayfarers – long considered one of the most classic styles a man can don – are well-suited to almost every face shape: trapezoidal frames can complement those lucky enough to boast natural-born angles, but also create the illusion of a Saint Laurent bone structure for those without.

What's more, they've got some political pedigree. Bill Clinton wore his own pair while Gerry Rafferty-ing the American public on late night TV. Hillary frequently opted for the shades, too. But, most famously, it was JFK that cemented the Wayfarers as the go-to shades for anyone with a hankering for the nuclear codes. The iconic photo of Jack aboard his yacht, Manitou, is as iconic a presidential image as Nixon's post-impeachment V-signs or Trump's pre-impeachment (please, god) thumbs up. Only, you know, actually cool.

Both Barack and JFK have one Raymond Stegeman to think. He designed the shape for Ray-Ban's parent company in 1952, other brands co-opted the design, and soon enough the shape became a bona fide summer classic.

Which, coincidentally, is every single day for Obama. Retirement is one long, lovely, well-spectacled holiday.
