Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar's Leading Ladies Are Style Icons. Yes, Really.

Truly, Barb and Star Go to Vista Del Mar is the movie we didn't know we needed: didn't know, because no sane human could have envisioned such a creation—save for certified Shrimp Queens Annie Mumulo and Kristen Wiig—and needed, because it is the ultimate antidote to our current condition. After this past year, much like Barb and Star, we all have lost our shimmer, and only an (imagined) visit to Vista Del Mar can bring it back. (A fling with Jamie Dornan would also probably do the trick, but that might prove harder to arrange.)

But to reach this fictitious Floridian getaway, you have to dress the part.

Vista Del Mar is an ode to all things castigated as kitschy or past their prime, positing clamshell headrests and flamingo tchotchkes as the height of glamour. "Our goal," production designer Steve Saklad told Architectural Digest, "was to make people feel like they are transported to ’50s Florida, and the idea is the jam has the exact same set up for the past 50 years." Swathed in bright culottes, floral prints, and shell-laden friendship bracelets, our heroines are the human embodiment of this middle-aged, touristy paradise. Watching them have the time of their lives in this surreal, coral and turquoise dreamscape, it's hard not to think that they know something we don't.

The key to Barb and Star's magic is their incorruptible authenticity: they adore their culottes and their curlers as unequivocally and earnestly as they love one another. It's an attitude mirrored in the film, as it tries, at every turn, to be wacky and silly and fun for the sake of it, and never once asks if it's gone too far. If Vista Del Mar is a state of mind, the trick is to embrace it all with open arms, like Barb and Star do, without a hint of irony. Nothing dulls one's shimmer as quickly as insincerity.
