Barberton man sentenced to life in prison for July 2020 murder in Akron

A Barberton man was sentenced Friday to life in prison in an Akron slaying that took place two years ago.

Charles Deel, 26, had been found guilty by a jury of murder and related charges on March 31.

Deel was sentenced to life with eligibility for parole in 21 years by Judge Joy Malek Oldfield.

Oldfield also found Deel guilty of being a repeat violent offender.

On July 30, 2020, 29-year-old Woody Cisterna was at a home on Kenmore Boulevard in Akron to pick up personal belongings. Deel was also at the home, working on his vehicle.

Witnesses said they heard gunshots, saw Cisterna lying on the ground and then saw Deel speed away in his vehicle.

The Northeast Ohio Fugitive Task Force arrested Deel several days later in Scio, Ohio, about 90 minutes south of Akron. Deel had the murder weapon in his possession.

Deel had been found guilty of:

• One count of murder with a gun specification.

• Felonious assault with a gun specification.

Deel pleaded guilty to a gun felony before his trial.
