Walking into movie theaters across the region this week and seeing the sea of "Barbie" moviegoers' pink outfits brings the "it's a Barbie world" to real life.

Directed by Greta Gerwig, "Barbie" forces us to consider Barbie's place in toy boxes, as a fun and empowering doll or a problematic depiction of women for the next generation.

Barbie, played by Margot Robbie, and Ken, played by Ryan Gosling, leave Barbie Land for the Real World and are confronted by gender dynamics.

The movie grossed more than $330 million over the July 23 weekend, according to Comscore, making it the most popular movie since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, and the biggest debut weekend ever for a film directed by a woman.

Is 'Barbie' for kids?

Barbie and Ken, with their endless wardrobes and ever-changing careers, exploded onto the American toy scene in 1959 and have been present in homes ever since.

It's no surprise to any readers that the iconic Barbie dolls are for kids, but the movie might not be.

In the words of USA Today's film critic Brian Truitt, "unless your child is REALLY into the study of gender norms and/or knows what the term “Proustian” means," Barbie the movie is not for kids.

It is a matter of attention span, not so much of inappropriate content.

Truitt predicts that teens and tweens might enjoy the social commentary in Gerwig's PG-13 movie, and "kids around 9 or 10 will enjoy the goofball humor while the intellectual discussion goes over their heads."

"Those younger than that, however, most likely will find a lot of the talking parts boring and could get antsy waiting for Barbie to do something fun again," Truitt wrote.
