When Barbie Ferreira stepped onto the red carpet at the MTV Movie and TV Awards in Los Angeles this past weekend, the Euphoria star gave onlookers a full-fledged style moment. In pastel latex from Vex Clothing, Ferreira honored the outré expectations of an awards show known for its jaw-dropping fashions, while giving her own take on sexy. Though many celebrities—Kim Kardashian, Nicki Minaj, and Dita von Tesse among them—have relied on Vex for skintight outfits, Ferreira’s ice blue mini dress was a surprisingly sweet version of a trend with fetish associations, exactly what she and stylist Chris Horan were going for. “I love the contrast between a fetish material like latex and the elegance, iconic-ness of Tiffany,” said Horan who partnered with the jewelry brand for Ferreira’s prim diamond earrings and pearl necklace. “[This outfit] not only ties in Barbie’s Euphoria characters storyline, but it also has all the sexy [and] campy elements that the awards are famous for.”

The concept for the look began with a conversation between Horan and Vex’s Laura Petrielli, channeling the ’90s film heroines Ferreira loves—Romy and Michelle’s High School Reunion features a similarly glossy baby blue number on Mira Sorvino—they came up with the idea for a slinky new dress based on the brand’s popular CL model. Customized with wider straps and the addition of silver o-rings, it tied in perfectly with the jewelry and moved from sketch to reality in under a week. “It took about five hours to make, but a couple days to conceive,” said Petrielli, “Barbie looked amazing!”

A seasoned fashion risk-taker, Ferreira was unphased by the challenge of wearing such a tricky fabric in the Hollywood heat. The “doll fantasy” of the complete look let her step onto the carpet feeling like a queen. “I felt silky and adorable,” she shared post-event. “The baby blue latex just made me feel like I’m powerful and the pearls made it look so pretty. This reflects my style because I love textures and playing with references from late 90s and early 2000s movies.”

For stars looking to try there hand at wearing rubber, Horan has a few important tips. “Latex definitely requires some commitment,” said Horan “It can get steamy but Barbie at this point is a pro. You’ve [just] got to make sure you shine it up with some oil before you leave so you sparkle.”
