Barnes & Noble moving from Framingham to Natick, Old Navy closing

FRAMINGHAM The Barnes & Noble store in Shoppers World is moving across Route 9 and about a half-mile east to the Sherwood Plaza in Natick.

Old Navy, which shares the same building as Barnes & Noble, will also close its Framingham location, but no plans have been announced in regards to a future location.

The 47,974-square-foot Shoppers World building that houses the two retailers will soon be razed to make way for a slightly smaller building 38,650 square feet that will contain an Amazon Fresh supermarket.

Barnes & Noble's new home at Sherwood Plaza will be inside a former Petco store, its space being between The Paper Store and Dick's Sporting Goods.

Business at the store was brisk during a reporter's visit during the week after Christmas, almost to the point that it seemed like it was before Christmas.

"I was surprised to see that the store was selling things half-off," said Declan Knight, of Wellesley, while browsing for books on Dec. 28. "You often hear about bookstores going out of business, so I'm happy that they are just going to be moving down the street. It's going to be about the same distance for me."

Old Navy's last day in Framingham is Jan. 24. A manager there confirmed the date with the Daily News, adding that a new location is not planned for at least a year. Current Framingham employees have the option to be transferred to other stores.

Starbucks, which is adjacent to Barnes & Noble and has an entrance connected to the bookstore, is also set to close on Jan. 22. However, it will not reopen inside the new Barnes & Noble at Sherwood Plaza, as there is already a Starbucks on that property.
