Barr forms panel on 'anti-government extremism'

After some violent protests erupted in the wake of the death of George Floyd, Attorney General William Barr created a task force to counter what he called "anti-government extremists" committing the violence.

In a memo to law enforcement and prosecutors released on Friday by the Department of Justice, Barr said alleged extremists had -quote- "engaged in indefensible acts of violence designed to undermine public order."

According to Barr - those acts included attacking police officers, damaging property and threatening innocent people.

Although largely peaceful, some demonstrations against police brutality of African Americans have turned violent… which President Donald Trump and his allies have blamed on left-wing extremists among the protesters.

(BARR/ JUNE 4) "At some demonstrations, there are extremist agitators who are hijacking the protests..."

Barr named the militant anti-government movement known as the "boogaloo" as well as the left-wing Antifa as among those posing continuing threats.

The new task force would be headed by two U.S. attorneys from Texas and New Jersey, would include members from different law enforcement agencies, and Barr said - it would "particularly draw on the capabilities of the FBI."
