‘Barrels of Love’ food drive kicking off in Decatur/Morgan County on Valentine’s Day

DECATUR, Ala. (WHNT) — The ‘Barrels (and Boxes) of Love’ non-perishable food drive will be kicking off on Valentine’s Day in the Decatur/Morgan County area.

After the holiday season, many food pantries are depleted and need help filling back up. Especially those gearing up for spring break, which is a time when many students need food.

That’s why Barrels of Love, a nonprofit, steps up alongside other organizations to help meet that need like Decatur Utilities.

“They have great partners. Spring breaks a challenge because that’s a whole week that they try and feed those kids. So what this does is help them send those kids home with a backpack full of stuff they can have for spring break, keep them from getting hungry,” Joe Holmes, Decatur Utilities Public Relations Coordinator, said.

Despite the nonprofit’s namesake being barrels – they’ll be switching it up this year and using pick-up boxes from International Paper at United Way of Morgan County or the Committee on Church Cooperation. Both of those places are located on 1st St. NW in Decatur.

All of the items collected in the drive will help fill food pantries at the Salvation Army of Decatur and Committee on Church Cooperation and help Backpack Feeding Programs cover Spring  Break for students at Decatur City and Morgan County Schools.
