Barricade situation involving 2-year-old brought to end in Delmar after shots fired: Police

UPDATE at 2:35 p.m.

A man was taken into custody Monday afternoon in a "barricade subject" incident in Delmar, Delaware, during which shots were fired. A child was in the home at the time and was removed safely, Delaware State Police said.

Delaware State Police Cpl. Leonardo DeMalto said in an afternoon news conference that police responded to a domestic incident call involving a "disagreement" between the man and his "girlfriend." The 911 call came in the morning, although an exact time was not immediately known.

The man, a 26-year-old from the Church Hill, Maryland, area, was inside the residence on East Grove Street with the 2-year-old and refused to exit, DeMalto said.

The man was given “numerous opportunities to surrender” to police, and when he didn't, police made entry into the house, he said. The suspect was taken into custody. Shots were fired, he said, but by whom and how many shots remained under investigation.

The 2-year-old was unharmed, but taken to a local hospital for evaluation as a precaution, DeMalto said. The man was treated on the scene for minor injuries.

The man had not been named by police as of 3 p.m.

Detectives remained on the scene Monday afternoon gathering evidence.
