Barricade situation in Raleigh leaves man dead, Memphis police officer on leave as TBI investigates
The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation is investigating what it described as "a possible officer-involved shooting" after a man was found dead following a standoff with officers during a barricade situation in Raleigh Sunday morning.
TBI identified the man as Eugene McNeal, 36.
Officers with the Memphis Police Department said they arrived at the 2500 block of Holly Hedge, which was called in as a domestic violence situation, and were able to find a woman and an undisclosed number of children unharmed just after 7:30 a.m. Sunday.
"When officers located the male, he was armed and pointed a weapon at officers," a statement posted to Twitter from MPD said. "One officer discharged his weapon. The male fled into the apartment, and officers made several attempts to get him to exit. Upon entry, they located the armed male suffering from a gunshot wound."
In a press conference Sunday afternoon, TBI officials said MPD officers entered the apartment shortly after 11 a.m. At least one additional gunshot had been heard in the area between the initial interaction between law enforcement and McNeal and when MPD entered the apartment.
The man was later pronounced dead by paramedics that were on standby, according to the MPD statement. Police said they are unsure if the gunshot wound was self-inflicted, or if the officer hit the man when firing his weapon.
TBI was called in by Shelby County District Attorney Steve Mulroy to investigate the shooting. MPD said the officer that fired his gun will be "relieved of duty" while the investigation is ongoing.
As of 3:30 p.m. Sunday, at least 10 law enforcement vehicles remained at the scene and TBI personnel could be seen around the scene collecting evidence.
TBI called into Memphis again
This is the fourth police shooting that TBI has been called in to investigate MPD for this year. TBI is the statewide agency that investigates local police shootings. It is standard practice to call TBI to investigate after a police-involved fatality.
TBI also investigated MPD officers after five of them beat 29-year-old Tyre Nichols in January. Nichols died three days later. That investigation was expedited, and charges were filed within weeks of the incident.
Most recently, TBI launched an investigation into the circumstances around 19-year-old Courtney Ross' death in MPD custody.
