Guns found in motel room of stabbing suspect involved in SWAT standoff

SPRING VALLEY, Calif. — A stabbing suspect was arrested after barricading himself inside a Spring Valley motel room on Monday, prompting a five-hour SWAT standoff. Authorities say they also found three handguns and numerous parts and tools to build AR-15 rifles in the motel room.

Roger Bell, 38, was booked on multiple charges including assault with a deadly weapon and false imprisonment, Detective Guadalupe Catano with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department.

Around 11 a.m., authorities received a call about a stabbing at Crown Inn & Suites in the 9600 block of Campo Road, San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said to FOX 5.

When law enforcement arrived, a man was found with an injured hand was taken to a hospital, SDSO said on the platform X, formerly known as Twitter. The victim told authorities he was stabbed in the hand with a 10-inch knife by a roommate.

“The victim and a friend were reportedly threatened with a gun and held against their will by the suspect for two hours,” Catano said. “Eventually, the men were able to escape the motel room and call 9-1-1.”

The stabbing victim was taken to a hospital, where he is expected to be okay.

Deputies surrounded the motel and attempted to contact the suspect with multiple phone calls and announcements, but the man refused, according to authorities.

Authorities announced in another post several hours later that suspect was arrested “without incident” just after 4 p.m.

The Chula Vista Police Department’s SWAT team and the SDSO Crisis Negotiation Team were also at the scene.

During the standoff, authorities had motel guests stay in their rooms and closed Campo Road at Hollyhock Lane, Rogers Road and Kenwood Drive and the state Route 94 on-ramp from Kenwood Drive. All roads have since been reopened.

Authorities did not immediately know the relationship between the suspect and the victim, or what led up to the stabbing.
