Barry Manilow to award Atlanta high school band director $5K for music program at tonight’s show

Grammy Award-winning singer Barry Manilow will award Adam Brooks, the band and music technology director at Atlanta High School will be awarded with The Manilow Music Teacher Award on Thursday night.

Manilow, 79, who was nominated for 15 Grammy Awards and won in 1978 for “Copacabana (At the Copa),” awards a music teacher at every stop of his arena tour. The veteran singer appears Thursday night at Sate Farm Arena.

The Atlanta School Board and State Farm Arena suggested schools and teachers in their area who they want to be considered for this award. In each city, the winning teacher will get a $5,000 cash award and another $5,000 in “Manilow bucks” presented by Barry Manilow to purchase musical instruments for their school’s music program.

Brooks will also get VIP tickets to the concert and get to will meet Manilow at the show for the award presentation.

“It is wonderful to partner with our concert venues to identify schools and music teachers in their neighborhoods that deserve this small token of my gratitude, said Manilow. “Many school music programs have either been terminated, or their funds have been severely depleted. I always want to do my part through The Manilow Music Project to keep music in schools.”

Earlier this month, a music teacher in Savannah won the award.
