Barstow High School retires Dodgers third base coach Dino Ebel's No. 6 jersey
Dino Ebel is all about giving back to the community of Barstow.
It was time to give the Los Angeles Dodgers third base coach a small token of appreciation.
That came in the form of retiring the No. 6 jersey we sported while playing baseball at Barstow High School.
Sporting his customary No. 91 Dodgers jersey and World Series ring, Ebel was back home for quite the celebration last week.
Barstow High School hosted Ebel and his family for a ceremony on Friday. Ebel talked to the school’s senior class and athletes, encouraging them to follow their dreams, just as he always has every time he returns to Barstow for his annual Dino Ebel Baseball Clinic.
"Mr. Ebel has had an exceptional career as a player and coach in the game of baseball, and hearing him speak to our students at Barstow High School inspired everyone who was a part of the ceremony and celebration," Barstow Unified School District Superintendent Jeff Malan said. "He reiterated that his goals have not yet been achieved until he is a manager in the major leagues. And I believe that will happen in the very near future. He is a very humble man and proud of his roots in Barstow."
Ebel graduated from BHS in 1984 and was named the San Andreas League’s co-MVP as a senior after posting a 7-2 record on the mound with a 2.78 ERA and clipping a .409 batting average with six homers and 19 RBI.
Ebel continued playing baseball at San Bernardino Valley College, where he hit .295 with six home runs and 34 runs.
He signed a letter of intent to transfer to California State University, Fullerton, but a transcript error revealed Ebel was one credit short of completing the transfer. He was drafted by the Philadelphia Phillies in the 27th round of the 1986 draft as a sophomore while still playing at SBVC.
But Ebel skipped out on joining the Phillies and transferred to Florida Southern College, where helped lead the Moccasins to the 1988 NCAA Division II championship in his senior year.
Ebel was named a second-team All-American as a middle infielder with a .365 batting average.
After going undrafted following his senior season, he signed with the Dodgers as a free agent.
Ebel reached Triple-A but transitioned to a player/coach before becoming a full-time coach. Before finally reaching the big leagues as a third-base coach with the Los Angeles Angels in 2006, he compiled a 531-496 record as a manager over eight minor league seasons.
Since reaching the show, Ebel has pitched to Vladimir Guerrero and Albert Pujols in the Home Run Derby and shared countless high-fives with Mike Trout during his home run trots.
Ebel was the third base coach until 2014 when he became the bench coach. He was named the team’s third base coach again in 2018, which was his final with the organization.
Since then, Ebel rejoined the Dodgers organization in November 2018 and has served as the third base coach.
These days you might see Ebel around driving a beautiful blue Corvette, recently gifted to him by Pujols, who was reunited with last season after the future Hall of Fame first baseman was abruptly released by the Angels.
