GREEN BAY - Commuters grumbling about hating Mondays just got one more grievance to jumpstart their week: Bart Starr Memorial Bridge will be closed for four days starting Monday next week for deck repairs.

The bridge carries Walnut Street traffic over the Fox River in downtown Green Bay.

"We had to order another joint, get that constructed and, now that we've got it, we're going to put it in," Jason Lahm, a bridge maintenance engineer with the Bureau of Structures, said. "This is something we've done many times, so we shouldn't run into anything we can't handle."

The repairs are a continuation of work following maintenance work on the bridge in April when engineers learned that part of the joint needed to be replaced, Lahm said.

The bridge closure will impact traffic from 7 a.m. on Monday until 5 p.m. on Thursday as Wisconsin Department of Transportation workers replace the joint, but farmers' market enthusiasts need not despair.

Those headed to the farmers' market on Broadway Wednesday evening will still be able to access the walkway. Foot traffic on the bridge is permitted after working hours, according to Wednesday's Green Bay Department of Public Works press release.

Its statement also recommended detours along North Broadway, Dousman Street, Main Street and North Monroe Avenue.

"Motorists should anticipate backups, use caution while driving through the work zone, and are encouraged to find alternate routes," the press release said.
