Baseball: 2022 Greater Newark Tournament bracket, scores and schedule
New Jersey's longest running baseball tournament is set to hold the 89th edition of its history. The Greater Newark tournament dates back to 1933 as an invitational with teams throughout the area. Since 1973, the GNT has been exclusive to Essex County baseball teams and has served as the county tournament for the area.
The 22-team tournament bracket was completed at Millburn High School on Monday night and the defending champion Millers are this season's top seed. The No. 2 seed belongs to Montclair, who has six county titles, most recently in 2019. The Mounties are the only team from Essex County to defeat Millburn this season.
Caldwell is the No. 3 seed in the tournament bracket on the strength of a nine-game winning streak. The Chiefs have not reached a tournament final since 1985, but hope to ride their hot hand to a far run in the tournament.
Caldwell's marquee win this season came against Seton Hall Prep, which is the fourth seed in the tournament. The Pirates have reached 25 tournament finals and won 17 GNT titles, ranking first in both lists. Seton Hall Prep lost in last season's tournament final in 11 innings, the longest title game in tournament history.
Tournament action begins on April 28 with one game in the first of three play-in rounds. Nine teams will play down to two remaining schools, who will join the remaining 14 teams in the tournament's first round on May 6.
Quarterfinals will be played by May 11 and be the final round with the higher seed hosting the game. Semifinal matchups take place at Verona High School on May 14 with the tournament final on May 21 at Yogi Berra Stadium on the campus of Montclair State University.
