Baseball: Enfield comes back to beat East Catholic

May 17—The Enfield High baseball team is headed to the postseason.

East Catholic's three-week search for its eighth win that will assure it a tourney berth continues.

Freshman Jack Raymond single plated Trent Barrows with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh inning Monday as Enfield edged East Catholic 5-4 in CCC East action at Powder Hollow's Bob Bromage Field in Enfield.

Enfield (8-7) has won two straight since a five-game losing streak and will take part in the Class LL state tournament,

Meanwhile, reigning Class M champion East Catholic (7-9) has lost eight in a row since winning seven of eight to open the season. It must beat either Southington on Wednesday or South Windsor next Monday to clinch a Class S bid.

Enfield used a three-run sixth to take a 4-2 lead only to see East Catholic get even with two runs in the top of the seventh. But Enfield would get the final say as Raymond delivered his second hit of the day.

Thomas Kluntz was 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI for Enfield. Chris Selle got the final out in the top of the seventh for the win.

Nate Grzybowski had two hits for East Catholic.

Enfield visits No. 3 Windsor Wednesday.

TOLLAND 11, HPHS/HMTCA 1. Josh Kleinberg pitched five innings of five-hit, shutout ball as Tolland picked up the CCC interdivisional win at Colt Park in Hartford.

Matt Haggerty had four hits and scored three runs for the Eagles (11-5). Cullen Rublewski added two hits and three RBIs while Nathan Bowes had two hits and two RBIs. Freshman Brandol Urena was 3-for-3 and drove in the run for the Owls (1-16).

Tolland is at Rocky Hill Wednesday.

RHAM 14, BRISTOL CENTRAL 4. RHAM broke out of an offensive slump with a 12-run fourth inning en route to a CCC interdivisional win at Muzzy Field in Bristol.

The Raptors (12-4) had scored only two runs in their three-game losing streak and had been shut out in back-to-back games before their explosion that gave them a 12-0 lead.

Freshman Fayz Baig had two hits and three RBIs for RHAM. He also scored twice. Brad D'Amico and Sean Connolly each had two hits and drove in two runs. Chase Melzen and Mike Poncini had two hits apiece.

Bristol Central is 7-9.

RHAM hosts Plainville Wednesday.

LEWIS MILLS 5, MANCHESTER 1. Austin Oulette pitched six innings of one-run ball, striking out six, as Lewis Mills took home a CCC interdivisional win at Mt. Nebo.

Lewis Mills is 11-6. Gio Morales allowed three hits and struck out 11 in a losing effort for Manchester (13-4). He had two hits. Caleb Camp drove in the lone run.

The Red Hawks travel to Clinton to take on Morgan School today.

SOUTH WINDSOR 3, MALONEY 1. South Windsor pitching limited Maloney to four hits in earning the CCC interdivisional home win at Rotary Park and snapping a five-game winning streak for the Spartans (10-7). The Bobcats (3-13) are at Platt Wednesday.

BERLIN 10, GLASTONBURY 9. Sal Dastoli's grand slam in the bottom of the seventh inning gave Berlin (7-10) the walkoff CCC interdivisional win at Sage Park. Glastonbury (12-5) hosts Newington Wednesday.

CHENEY TECH 10, WINDHAM TECH 5. Jack McLellan had three hits and four RBIs as Cheney Tech's CTC home win assured it a berth in the Class L state tournament.

Jacob Perez, Dylan Connaughton, and Andrew Alexander added two hits each for the Beavers (8-10). Connaughton was the winning pitcher with a nine-hitter. He struck out seven. Windham Tech is also 8-10.

Cheney Tech is at Bolton today.

COVENTRY 8, WINDSOR LOCKS 0. AJ Rooks fired a two-hitter for his second straight shutout in Coventry's NCCC road win at Veterans Memorial Park. He walked none and struck out 11.

The Patriots (13-5, 9-3 NCCC) took a 2-0 first-inning lead and never looked back. Nate Cordner was 4-for-4 for Coventry. Matt LaFountain went 4-for-5 and drove in two runs. Aidan Hecht added two hits.

Colin Duquette and Xavier Angel had the hits for the Raiders (6-11, 5-7), who must win at least two of their last three games to be assured of a Class S state tournament bid.

Windsor Locks is at Hale-Ray today.

SOMERS 11, CANTON 2. Troy Maia pitched 5Ï innings of two-run ball as Somers recorded a six-inning NCCC win at Bowdoin Field in Canton.

It was the second win for the Spartans (14-4, 9-2 NCCC) over the Warriors (9-7, 6-5) in four days. Somers defeated Canton 13-2 in five innings on Friday.

Kaede Wood had three hits and Aidan Miller two hits for Somers, which was eliminated from the race for the NCCC title when Ellington edged Rockville. Jack Biskupiak homered for Canton.

The Spartans complete the NCCC portion of their schedule at Stafford today.

SMSA 8, STAFFORD 2. Rory Mayer tossed six innings of four-hit ball as SMSA posted a win at Dunkin' Donuts Park in Hartford. The game between NCCC foes did not count in the league standings.

Mayer walked two and struck out seven for the Tigers (9-9), who avenged a five-inning, mercy-rule loss to the Bulldogs (11-7) from April 7. Zaynn Godbee drove in two runs while Dylan Kolakowski and Isai Martinez had two hits each.

Ryan Duffy and Andrew McGann reached base in all three of their plate appearances for Stafford Isaac Minaya had a run-scoring triple. Mason Wilson was the losing pitcher.

Stafford hosts Somers today.

GRANBY 17, BOLTON 1. Josh Selander went 3-for-3 with two home runs and six RBIs as Granby's NCCC road win in five innings wrapped up a Class M state tournament berth.

Trey Santasiere and Tim May added two hits each for the Bears (8-8, 6-5). Everett Paine allowed seven hits over five innings to pick up the win. Bryan Diehl drove in the lone run for Bolton (0-17, 0-11). Sam Segar and Ben Roth doubled. The Bulldogs host Cheney Tech today.
