Baseball-Highlights of Saturday's MLB games

Aug 16 (Reuters) - Highlights of Saturday's Major League Baseball games: - - Yankees 3, Rays 2 Derek Jeter drove a single just past the outstretched glove of second baseman Logan Forsythe to score Brett Gardner from second base in the top of the ninth inning and the New York Yankees edged the Tampa Bay Rays on Saturday at Tropicana Field. The Yankees ended a five-game skid overall, tied for their longest of the season, and a five-game losing streak to the Rays. Starting pitchers Drew Smyly of the Rays and Shane Greene of the Yankees were both effective, but neither figured in the final decision. - - Giants 6, Phillies 5 Rookie Joe Panik tripled and scored on Gregor Blanco's single in the eighth inning, capping a comeback that lifted San Francisco past Philadelphia. The loss was the third in four games for the Phillies on their five-game California swing that concludes on Sunday. - - Marlins 2, Diamondbacks 1 Marcell Ozuna scored the tie-breaking run in the seventh inning to lead Miami to a win over Arizona at Marlins Park. Arizona were charged with five errors and the winning run was unearned. - - Indians 6, Orioles 0 Carlos Carrasco pitched seven scoreless innings and Carlos Santana and Michael Brantley homered to lead Cleveland to a shutout win over former teammate Ubaldo Jimenez and Baltimore at Progressive Field. In just his second start since re-entering the rotation after spending three months in the bullpen, Carrasco (5-4) gave up three hits, with five strikeouts and no walks. In his two starts since re-joining the rotation, Carrasco has pitched 12 scoreless innings on five hits, with nine strikeouts and no walks. - - Twins 4, Royals 1 Phil Hughes pitched 7-1/3 innings and received some timely offensive support as Minnesota defeated Kansas City at Target Field. Hughes and Royals right-hander Yordano Ventura were locked in a duel throughout the game. Ventura did not give up many hits but allowed six walks. Each time Ventura was in trouble, he escaped - until a three-run seventh inning. Hughes did not walk a batter and struck out six, allowing one run and seven hits, including six singles, in winning his 13th game of the season. - - Mets 7, Cubs 3 New York scored four runs off just one hit in the sixth inning and right-hander Vic Black masterfully worked out of an inherited bases-loaded jam in the seventh inning as the Mets beat Chicago at Citi Field. Jonathon Niese (7-8) won his second successive start after allowing three runs on seven hits and two walks while striking out six over six-plus innings. - - Nationals 4, Pirates 3 Wilson Ramos hit a walk-off ground-rule double into the Washington bullpen in right field with no outs in the bottom of the ninth inning against reliever Justin Wilson as the Nationals beat Pittsburgh. It was the fifth win in a row for the first-place Nationals, who began the day six games ahead of the Atlanta Braves in the National League East. The winning pitcher was Matt Thornton (1-0) and Wilson (3-3) was tagged with the loss. - - Tigers 4, Mariners 2 David Price won his home debut with Detroit, limiting Seattle to one run and three hits while outdueling Mariners ace Felix Hernandez. Price (12-8), who had two no-decisions on the road after being acquired from Tampa Bay at the July 31 trade deadline, collected seven strikeouts in eight innings. Hernandez only lasted 92 pitches and five innings, equaling his shortest stint of the season, while giving up two runs and seven hits. - - Blue Jays 6, White Sox 3 Toronto capitalized against Chicago's struggling bullpen to end a four-game losing streak at U.S. Cellular Field. After their own bullpen coughed up a three-run lead in the sixth inning, the Blue Jays scored three runs in the seventh in a 6-3 win to split the first two games of a three-game series. - - Braves 4, Athletics 3 Atlanta's Chris Johnson went 3-for-4 and drove in two runs as the Braves beat Oakland. Craig Kimbrel recorded his 36th save in 40 opportunities. The A's lost for the sixth time in seven games. - - Red Sox 10, Astros 7 David Ortiz hit a pair of two-run homers, including the 400th of his Boston career, and drove in a career-high-tying six runs to power Boston to a comeback victory over Houston. Ortiz belted his first homer off Houston starter Brad Peacock in the third inning, becoming the 25th player to hit 400 with one team, and only the third to do so with Boston, joining Hall of Famers Ted Williams (521) and Carl Yastrzemski (452). Ortiz's second of the game off Peacock, a line drive that curled just inside the right-field foul pole for his 28th of the season and 459th of his decorated career, ignited the surge.
