The Miracle League of the 805 held a groundbreaking ceremony for a new baseball field at Freedom Park near the Camarillo Airport on Wednesday.

The local league is part of a national movement to get children and adults with mental and physical disabilities out on the field playing ball and socializing.

Called Friendship Field, the $1.3 million project is expected to be complete by the end of September, said Rick Peña, co-founder of the league. Construction began two weeks ago.

A grand opening game is planned for October, but Peña said the league will begin in earnest when the season starts next March.

Sign-ups haven't begun, though Peña expects between 40 to 50 players from Santa Barbara, Ventura and Los Angeles counties to register. In later years, that number could climb up to 250.
