Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

March 25 (The Sports Xchange) - Former major-league pitcher Frank Viola is scheduled to undergo open-heart surgery next week that will keep him from serving as a triple-A pitching coach for the New York Mets this season. The 53-year-old Viola, who won the American League Cy Young Award in 1988 when he posted a 24-7 record for the Minnesota Twins, was diagnosed with a heart condition after a physical during spring training. ESPNNewYork.com reported Tuesday. After working as a Class A pitching coach for the past three seasons in the Mets' organization, he was to move up to triple-A Las Vegas in the Pacific Coast League this year to work with some of New York's top prospects. Ron Romanick is expected to take his place. - - The Minnesota Twins traded right-handed pitcher Vance Worley to the Pittsburgh Pirates on Tuesday for an undisclosed amount of cash. Worley was outrighted off the Twins' 40-man roster on Friday after appearing in four spring training games, including three starts, posting an 0-1 record with a 13.50 ERA. - - Right-hander Michael Pineda will be the New York Yankees' fifth starter when the regular season begins next week. After missing the past two seasons because of shoulder surgery, Pineda returned this spring and won the job over David Phelps, Adam Warren and Vidal Nuno, manager Joe Girardi announced Tuesday. In 15 innings during spring training, Pineda has 16 strikeouts, one walk and a 1.20 ERA. - - The Miami Marlins released infielder Ty Wigginton on Tuesday, after he failed to make the team on a minor-league contract. Wigginton hit just .147 in 24 spring training at-bats. He signed a minor-league deal with the club in January. The 12-year veteran was released by the St. Louis Cardinals last season after just 58 plate appearances into a two-year, $5 million contract. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
