June 13 (The Sports Xchange) - The Chicago Cubs placed outfielder-infielder Emilio Bonifacio on the disabled list with a rib-cage injury before Friday night's game against the Philadelphia Phillies. Bonifacio, the Cubs' leadoff hitter, was injured during Thursday night's 4-0 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates when he grounded out to short on the second pitch of the game. - - Baltimore Orioles minor league right-handed pitcher Eduardo Gamboa received a 50-game drug suspension, the Office of the Commissioner of Baseball announced. Gamboa tested positive for exogenous Testosterone, a performance-enhancing substance in violation of the Minor League Drug Prevention and Treatment Program. - - The New York Yankees signed reliever Heath Bell to a minor league contract. The Yankees sent the veteran right-hander to Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre and right-hander Mark Montgomery was moved to Double-A Trenton to make room on the roster. The 36-year-old Bell pitched 17 1/3 innings in 13 games with the Tampa Bay Rays this season and had an 0-1 record with a 7.27 ERA. - - The Cleveland Indians recalled left-handed relief pitcher Kyle Crockett and optioned left-hander Nick Hagadone to Triple-A Columbus. Crockett, 23, will be joining the Indians for the second time this season after having his contract selected from Double-A Akron on May 16 to make his major league debut. - - The St. Louis Cardinals activated first baseman Matt Adams from the 15-day disabled list and optioned outfielder Oscar Taveras to Triple-A Memphis. Adams, who had a left calf strain, completed a four-game injury rehabilitation stint with Memphis this past week, going 3-for-15 with a pair of RBIs. - - The Minnesota Twins placed Aaron Hicks on the 15-day disabled list and activated fellow center fielder Sam Fuld. Hicks had not played since Monday. He injured his shoulder while making a game-ending diving catch in center field on Saturday against the Houston Astros, and he said earlier this week that he was still having trouble throwing the ball. - - San Diego Padres rookie right-hander Jesse Hahn will be officially added to the roster before he starts on Saturday. Hahn, who was pitching at Double-A Mobile, grew up two hours east of Queens in Groton, Conn., where he was a high school teammate of injured New York Mets right-hander Matt Harvey. - - Mets outfielder Eric Young (right hamstring strain) had his rehab moved to Double-A Binghamtony. Manager Terry Collins is hopeful that Young can rejoin the Mets in St. Louis on Monday. - - The Milwaukee Brewers plan to activate left-hander Tom Gorzelanny from the disabled list Saturday. Gorzelanny hasn't played this season after a slow recovery from offseason shoulder surgery. - - Cincinnati Reds right-hander Mat Latos will make his 2014 debut Saturday against the Brewers at Miller Park. Latos underwent knee surgery during spring training and then had his comeback delayed by a strained elbow. When he was finally able for a minor league rehab assignment, Latos posted a 2.33 ERA in four starts and threw as many as 81 pitches. - - Toronto Blue Jays outfielder Colby Rasmus (right hamstring) went 1-for-3 in his first rehab start Thursday, serving as DH for Triple-A Buffalo. He was expected play five innings in the outfield Friday. - - Baltimore Orioles right-hander Miguel Gonzalez is eligible to come off the disabled list Sunday. He could make his next start Tuesday or Wednesday at Tampa Bay. - - Boston Red Sox right-hander Clay Buchholz, on the 15-day DL since May 27, was expected to make his first rehab start with Triple-A Pawtucket on Friday night.
