Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

May 18 (The Sports Xchange) - Chicago White Sox rookie first baseman Jose Abreu was placed on the 15-day disabled list on Sunday with tendinitis in his left ankle. Abreu, who leads the major leagues with 15 home runs, was diagnosed with posterior tibia tendinitis. He had been relegated to designated hitter duties for more than a week, and was wearing a shield in an effort to protect the ankle. But he tweaked it Friday night and was clearly bothered by it during Saturday night's loss to the Houston Astros. - - - The Washington Nationals placed left-hander Gio Gonzalez on the 15-day disabled list with inflammation in his pitching shoulder. Gonzalez, with a 3-4 record, was scheduled to undergo an MRI. It is the first time the 28-year-old is headed to the DL in his seven-year career. - - - The St. Louis Cardinals activated left-handed pitcher Jaime Garcia from the disabled list. Garcia started Sunday against the Atlanta Braves, appearing in a game for the first time in a year. He allowed five hits and four runs in seven innings, striking out five. He had surgery for a torn labrum and rotator cuff last May. (Editing by Gene Cherry)
