Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

Aug 16 (The Sports Xchange) - Taking another step forward in his comeback from an elbow injury, New York Yankees right-hander Masahiro Tanaka threw a 25-pitch bullpen session Saturday. It was the ace's first bullpen session in a month since going on the disabled list with a partial tear in his pitching elbow. - - Days after the Cincinnati Reds announced that Homer Bailey would miss his upcoming start due to a right elbow injury, the team placed the right-hander on the 15-day disabled list. The move was made retroactive to Aug. 8, meaning Bailey could be activated as soon as Friday. - - The Chicago White Sox subbed one outfielder for another on the disabled list, activating Avisail Garcia to take the place of Moises Sierra. Garcia was sidelined since tearing the labrum in his left (non-throwing) shoulder while attempting a diving catch April 9. - - The Miami Marlins activated right-hander Henderson Alvarez from the 15-day disabled list, and he started Saturday's game against the Arizona Diamondbacks. Alvarez, 24, missed two starts with shoulder inflammation. - - The Chicago Cubs optioned outfielder Junior Lake to Triple-A Iowa and recalled right-handed pitcher Dan Straily, who started Saturday night against the New York Mets. Lake, 24, is batting just .216 with 102 strikeouts and only 10 walks in 305 plate appearances. He batted .284 in 64 games last year but has struggled this season. - - The Tampa Bay Rays recalled infielder Vince Belnome from Durham and optioned right-hander Brandon Gomes to the Triple-A club. Belnome went 0-for-3 in his lone game for Tampa Bay earlier this season, July 3 at Detroit. He was hitting .241 with a .360 on-base percentage and nine homers in 106 games for Durham. - - The Toronto Blue Jays recalled right-hander Kyle Drabek from Triple-A Buffalo. He takes the bullpen spot vacated Friday night when right-hander Chad Jenkins was optioned to Buffalo. - - St. Louis Cardinals right-hander Michael Wacha threw off a mound for the first time in two months. Wacha, who is 5-5 with a 2.79 ERA in 15 starts, went on the disabled list June 22 due to a stress reaction in his right shoulder. - - Mets right-hander Jacob deGrom (right rotator cuff tendinitis) said he felt good after throwing Saturday for the first time since going on the disabled list Tuesday. The team hopes he can come off the disabled list when eligible Aug. 23. - - White Sox great Minnie Minoso was hospitalized in Chicago after falling off his boat. Team spokesman Scott Reifert told WMAQ-TV that Minoso, who is 88, was pulled from the water Friday and taken to St. Joseph Hospital for tests. White Sox representatives spoke with Minoso on Saturday and said that he was doing fine. Minoso, a nine-time All-Star and Gold Glove-winning outfielder, made his major league debut in 1951 and played his final game in 1980. (Editing by Frank Pingue)
