Baseball-Major League Baseball roundup

Aug 1 (The Sports Xchange) - Major League Baseball upheld an overturned call from Thursday's game between the Cincinnati Reds and Miami Marlins after reviewing the ruling. After Zack Cozart of the Reds was called out by home plate umpire Mike Winters on a throw home to Marlins catcher Jeff Mathis in the eighth inning, a review of the play overturned the call and Cozart was ruled safe. Officials ruled that Mathis was blocking the plate on the play. The run tied the score at 1-1 and the Reds went on to win 3-1. If the original call stood, the inning would have ended with Miami up 1-0. Mathis was in Cozart's running lane when he caught the throw home from Marlins right fielder Giancarlo Stanton, but the throw beat Cozart by several steps. Rule 7.13 states that a catcher may block the plate if he has the ball. The review that overturned Winters' call took about six minutes. "We realize that people may reasonably have different opinions regarding the application of Rule 7.13 in any particular instance because it is a judgment call," read a statement by MLB on Friday. "We are continuously evaluating the application of the new rule, and we anticipate a full review with all appropriate parties in the offseason in order to determine whether any changes should be made. We also recognize that the exorbitant length of last night's review, which was more than three times the season average, must be avoided in the future." - - - The Tampa Bay Rays expressed a collective sense of disappointment that left-hander David Price was traded to the Detroit Tigers before Thursday's deadline but vowed to continue pushing toward a playoff spot. Several were relieved the team didn't execute a full fire sale, instead holding on to everyone else. "I was hoping it wouldn't happen, but it did happen. This is who we are." - - - Left-hander Drew Smyly, acquired from the Tigers in the Price trade, is expected to make his first start Tuesday. Profar, 21, has been sidelined with shoulder problems since spring training and eventually had surgery. - - - Veteran pitcher Joe Saunders, who has bounced around the major leagues this season, signed a minor league contract with the Baltimore Orioles. - - - The Cleveland Indians promoted outfielder Tyler Holt from Triple-A Columbus.
