Baseball: Martin County, Jensen Beach, John Carroll Catholic and Okeechobee win district

District 12-6A

Martin County 10, Sebastian River 0 (5 innings)

Florida Atlantic signee Tyler Murphy put together a virtuoso performance Thursday night, firing a no-hitter striking out 10 and went 2-for-2 with a double and an RBI to send Martin County to a 10-0 victory over Sebastian River for the District 12-6A title.

Playing on the campus of rival South Fork, Murphy was brilliant issuing only a lone walk and threw 70 pitches to secure the victory.

Martin County scored five runs in the second inning, added a run in the third and brought across four more runs in the fourth as six different players brought in a run.

Jake Schincariol went 3-for-3 with a double and an RBI, Dylan Murphy went 2-for-3 with two RBI, Brady Nash had a double and two RBI and Kyle Davis went 1-for-3 with two RBI to lead the offense for the Tigers (18-7).

Martin County will await their opponent for a home regional quarterfinal to take place on Tuesday, May 10.

Sebastian River likely will not earn an at-large berth into the state tournament and will finish the season with a 12-13-1 record.

District 12-4A

Jensen Beach 4, Merritt Island 0

Chris Knier struck out eight in 5⅔ innings, allowing only two hits and Patrick Ward sat down all four hitters he faced as the Falcons (22-4) went on the road to knock off the Mustangs for the District 12-4A title.

Playing as the home team at Merritt Island's field, the top-seeded Falcons took flight in the third inning as Patrick Gillen drove in a run with an RBI double. Ty Velardo later brought across another run with an infield single and Kyle Derrenbacker's sacrifice fly made it 3-0.

Knier, who stranded two runners in scoring position in the first inning with back-to-back strikeouts, sat down 11 in a row at one point from the first inning onward and was given another run to work with as Jensen Beach scored on a wild pitch in the fifth.

Merritt Island managed just four runners to reach base the entire game on Knier and Ward, never mounting a threat after the opening inning.

Gillen had a 3-for-3 night with a pair of doubles and Ty Velardo went 2-for-4 with a double for Jensen Beach, who will host a regional quarterfinal on Wednesday, May 11.

The Falcons will be expected to be the No. 1 team in Region 3-4A meaning that the road to a state semifinal would come through Jensen Beach if the Falcons can hold serve.

District 13-2A

John Carroll Catholic 11, Jupiter Christian 1 (5 innings)

Scoring six runs in the fourth and four more in the sixth, John Carroll Catholic downed Jupiter Christian 11-1 to win their 12th straight game and in the process earn the District 12-3A title.

With the game tied at 1 entering the bottom of the fourth, the Rams (18-9) kicked it into gear as all but one starter had at least one hit and Armani Newton had a double and drove in four runs on the night.

AJ Wydra had two hits and an RBI but excelled on the mound in a big way, striking out eight in four innings and allowed an unearned run to pick up the win.

Grant Gilooly went 1-for-3 with a triple and two RBI and Kevin Smith went 1-for-3 with two RBI for John Carroll, who will host a regional quarterfinal on Wednesday, May 11.

District 12-5A

Okeechobee 3, Suncoast 1

Emery Coleman struck out seven and scattered seven hits in a complete game effort and Ethan Bloomfield went 2-for-3 with an RBI as the Brahmans (12-13) won the District 12-5A title.

It is the second year in a row the program brought home a district championship at home, last year defeating South Fork for the 14-5A title.

Coleman's pitching performance backed up a combined one-hitter thrown in Okeechobee's 8-0 semifinal win over Port St. Lucie on Tuesday with Jacob Hardy striking out 10 in 5⅔ innings.

The Brahmans will host a regional quarterfinal game on Tuesday, May 10.
