Baseball player from Elon University killed in hit-and-run accident in Myrtle Beach Sunday

An Elon University student in Myrtle Beach with his baseball team was killed Sunday night in a hit-and-run accident, the university’s vice president said.

Jackson Yelle, a junior from North Eastham, Massachusetts, was on a weekend trip in Myrtle Beach with his Club Baseball team members, according to a statement on the North Carolina school’s website from Jon Dooley, vice president for student life, on Sunday.

The 21-year-old was identified by the Horry County Coroner’s office as the person who died in the accident. Yelle was struck by a vehicle at 1:30 a.m. Sunday, according to Chief Deputy Coroner Tamara Willard.

Myrtle Beach Police are investigating the accident.

According to police, an officer with the Horry County Police Department alerted the Myrtle Beach Police at 7:24 a.m. Sunday that an unresponsive male was located beside Highway 17 Bypass north of 21st Avenue North.

The investigation showed that a vehicle struck the man as he attempted to cross the highway on foot.

“The death of a student is a heartbreaking loss,” the university’s statement said. “Please keep Jackson’s family and friends in your thoughts at this challenging time and continue to care for each other in the days and weeks ahead.”
