Baseball recap: Eaton bats get hot, Byron Nelson pitcher blanks Bell, Timberview blows by Saginaw

After the Boswell Pioneers tied the series in Game 2 by a single run, the Eaton Eagles got home runs from Xavier Casserilla, Matthew Holt and Landon Winningham to take Game 3 and the Class 6A bi-district championship Saturday in Haslet.

Eaton entered as the No. 4 seed from 4-6A and took down District 3-6A champ Boswell. The Eagles go to area to face Midland Lee, which swept its series with El Paso Eastlake.

Boswell was on a roll in Game 3 with a 3-0 lead through three innings sparked by a two-run home run from Coleton Sedberry in the top of the third. But Eaton would score the next nine runs, including five in the sixth.

Holt led off the fifth with a solo home run to tie the game at 3-3. Two batters later and the Eagles took the lead for good on a solo shot from Winningham. A Holt RBI single in the sixth was followed by Casserilla’s two-run homer to left to push the margin to 9-3.

Holt went 3 for 4 while Casserilla went six innings and allowed five hits with seven strikeouts. Eaton won 12-5 in Game 1 Friday night.

Boswell tied the series in the first game Saturday. After scoring three in the top of the first inning, Eaton responded with four in the bottom of the frame. The Pioneers tacked on two more a half inning later on a sac-fly from Marcus Rodriguez and RBI single by Wyatt Fielding to take a 5-4 lead.

Holding onto an 8-7 lead and with the tying run at second, Boswell’s Ty Adams struck out the final batter to send the series to a Game 3.

LD Bell 2, Byron Nelson 1

Chris Martin threw a one-hit shutout to help the Byron Nelson Bobcats to the win in Game 3 and Class 6A bi-district title Saturday in Trophy Club. Texas Tech signee Hudson White hit a homer and Quaid Tschetter added an RBI double.

Brayden Pasley led off the fifth with a single for Bell’s only hit. The Blue Raiders pitching allowed four hits and each team struck out twice. The Bobcats advance to area to face Odessa Permian, which swept El Paso Socorro.

The Bobcats won 2-1 on Friday and Bell returned the favor to start Saturday play with a one-run win. Zack Zarko drove in the go-ahead run in the fifth for Bell. Micah Ford pitched all seven allowing six hits.

Benbrook 10, Bridgeport 5

After falling behind in the series with a 5-4 defeat in Game 1 on Thursday, Benbrook bounced back with a win Friday and Saturday to take the Class 4A bi-district championship.

Payton Poole doubled and drove in two runs to help his cause from the mound where he went six innings and struck out nine batters.

The Bobcats scored in each of the first five innings, including four in the second. Dee Kennedy led off the bottom of the first with a triple and scored on Devin Bennett’s RBI double to left. Bennett finished 3 for 4 with three RBIs.

Grayson Bainbridge and Maddox McKinley drove in two runs for Benbrook, which advances to the area round to play Iowa Park, a winner over Brownwood. That series will start 7 pm Friday in Bowie with a possible doubleheader on Saturday.

Mansfield Timberview 16, Saginaw 1 (5)

After the first two games were won by the home team via walk-off, Timberview blew open the rubber match Saturday at home with eight runs in the bottom of the third.

Khalil Walker hit a grand slam and Cedric Marshall and Joaquin Hernandez each drove in three runs as the Wolves run-ruled the Rough Riders to win the Class 5A bi-district series. The Wolves advance to area to play Granbury, which swept District 6-5A champ Grapevine Friday night.

Saginaw’s Dylan Garcia hit a first-inning homer for the Rough Riders’ only run. Timberview scored three in the bottom of the first and five in the second to go up 8-1. Austin Brown pitched all five innings allowing two hits and striking out eight batters to help the program win its first playoff series since 2015.

Joshua 6, Royse City 1

The Joshua Owls combined to throw a five-hitter with one unearned run to beat the Bulldogs in Game 3 of their Class 5A bi-district series Saturday at Cleburne.

The Owls advance to area to play Hallsville, which swept Huntsville. Joshua dropped Game 1, 3-0 on Thursday and won Game 2, 10-4 on Friday.

Joshua broke opened a 1-1 game with five runs through the fifth and sixth innings. The Owls took the lead on an RBI walk from Lane Snow and scored again following a Royse City error. They added three the next inning all with two outs with another RC error and bases-loaded walk.

Cree Tassin’s RBI single extended the margin to 6-1.
