Baseball roundup: Memorable day for Litchfield Dragons and their coach

May 18—LITCHFIELD — It was a memorable day for Litchfield baseball and not just because the Dragons beat fourth-ranked Watertown-Mayer 4-3 in 11 innings.

Litchfield head coach Jeff Wollin secured his 400th career victory.

Cal Jones scored the winning run in the bottom of the 11th after an infield hit, two bunts and a couple of errors.

Caden Besemer and Owen Carlson combined to hold the Royals to four hits. Besemer went the first eight innings, allowing one earned run. Carlson went the final three, striking out three, walking no one and allowing two hits.

Hunter Schultz hit a two-out, RBI double that scored Bradley Larson with the game-tying run in the bottom of the seventh.

It was Litchfield's first home game of the season. The Dragons have been patiently awaiting the re-opening of Optimist Park after many improvements that began last fall and were completed this spring.

Watertown-Mayer is now 8-4 in the Wright County Conference West Division and 12-5 overall. Litchfield is 5-8 in the WCC and 7-8 overall.

Wollin came into the season ranked 31st all-time in career coaching wins with a 393-325 record over 31 seasons. The all-time wins leader is St. Cloud Cathedral's Bob karn, who came into the season with an 812-322 record over 50 seasons.

Down 4-1 after five innings, Willmar opened the floodgates with a seven-run top of the sixth to beat the St. Cloud Crush at St. Cloud.

"We were putting the ball in play all game and hit it right at the defender," said Cardinals head coach Tom DeBoer. "In the sixth, we hit some holes and caught some breaks. That's what you call baseball sometimes.

"It was contagious in that inning; everyone was hitting the ball hard and there was a lot of energy coming out of the dugout."

Mason Madsen finished 2-for-3 with a pair of runs for Willmar. Coming in as a pinch hitter, Carter Schow finished 2-for-2 with two RBIs and a pair of runs scored. Alex Schramm also drove in a pair of runs, going 1-for-3 with a double.

On the mound, Cayden Hansen tallied five strikeouts over six innings to lock up the win.

"Cayden wasn't as sharp with his control as he normally is but he battled through some tough innings," DeBoer said. "You have to tip your cap to your pitcher when they give you a chance. We feel confident when Cayden's on the mound."

Willmar's next game, at Sauk Rapids, was moved from Thursday to Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Bob Cross Field.
