Baseball roundup: Paynesville bounces Redwood Valley, 8-5

Jun. 1—MARSHALL — The Paynesville baseball team improved its record to 20-0 with a big playoff victory Tuesday night at Legion Field.

The Bulldogs beat Redwood Valley 8-5 in the Section 3AA-North playoffs.

Paynesville plays Fairmont at noon Saturday in Marshall in the winners' bracket.

"We got off to a 6-0 lead in the first few innings," said Paynesville head coach Brad Skoglund. "We scored all six of our runs with two outs.

"Grayson Fuchs had a big two-run double. They (the Cardinals) came back with five runs in the fourth inning. Bennett Evans pitched us out of the inning."

In the seventh inning, Isaac Lieser smacked a two-run double to right-center field to make it 8-5.

"Our section's tougher than heck," said Skoglund, noting that Fairmont is ranked No. 1 in the QRF power ratings. "Redwood was pretty high, too. Morris is up there and Windom has a nice team, too."

Redwood Valley is 16-5.

Fairmont beat Morris/Chokio-Alberta 11-0 to advance.

A pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning kept Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City's season alive in a Section 3AA elimination game against Minnewaska at Montevideo.

ACGC will play Redwood Valley in an elimination game at 5 p.m. Thursday at Legion Field in Marshall.

The Falcons pulled ahead 2-1 after an error allowed Logan Straumann to score. Later in the inning, Jaxon Behm had an RBI base hit that brought home Jack Peterson.

Straumann was 2-for-3 with a double to lead ACGC's offense. Connor Barker picked up the win after striking out nine over 5-2/3 innings. Behm got the save, striking out three in 1-1/3 innings.

Torii Johnson, Dylan Alexander and Hunter Johnson all had hits for the Lakers. PJ Johnson tossed all six innings in the loss.

Ninth-seeded Litchfield stunned top-seeded Southwest Christian with a one-run victory in the second round of the Section 5AA tournament at Fritz Field in Cologne.

The Dragons will face Wright County Conference rival Rockford at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Rockford. The fourth-seeded Rockets advanced with a 7-0 win over No. 5 Providence Academy on Tuesday.

MACCRAY advanced in Section 3A with the victory over Murray County Central at Yankee Field in Milroy.

Dreyer Homan was 2-for-4 with a home run and four RBIs for the Wolverines. Winning pitcher Brooks Asche also was 2-for-4 at the plate. On the mound, Asche went the distance, striking out nine and walking two. He allowed three hits and one earned run.

MACCRAY plays Russell-Tyler Ruthton at noon Saturday at Yankee Field in Milroy. R-T-R advanced by beating Lac qui Parle Valley 3-2.

The winner advances in the championship bracket, which concludes June 9.

Dawson-Boyd eliminated Yellow Medicine East from the Section 3A playoffs with the victory at Montevideo.

The Blackjacks play Murray County Central at 5 p.m. Thursday in Milroy in the losers' bracket.

Blake Thompson was 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored for D-B. He also got the win in a complete game. Brayden Hahn had a pair of RBIs and a run scored, going 1-for-4.

Bryce Sneller was 3-for-4 with a double, a run and an RBI for the Sting. Drew Almich was 2-for-4. YME wraps up the season at 11-9.

Wylee Lottman, Jaiden Henjum and Chase Magaard combined for nine strikeouts while holding No. 8 Hancock to one hit as top-seeded Kerkhoven-Murdock-Sunburg won its Section 6A-South opener at Sunburg.

Henjum got the win following three innings of relief.

Jared Cortez was 3-for-4 with two doubles, five RBIs and a run scored for the Fighting Saints. Isaac Rudningen had two hits, three runs and an RBI in the victory.

KMS faces fourth-seeded Border West at 2:30 p.m. Thursday in Morris. The No. 4 Buccaneers advanced after a 21-1 win against No. 5 Ortonville. There are games afterwards for both teams in the winner's and loser's bracket scheduled for 4:30 p.m.

Second-seeded Upsala/Swanville shut out seventh-seeded Benson to get a six-inning win in the opening round of the Section 6A-South playoffs at Upsala.

Garrett Lenz, Anthony Klasssen and Max Nygaard each had hits for the Braves. Klassen was hit with the loss.

Shane Lembrecht and Luke Harren were both 3-for-4 for the Patriots. Micah Ripplinger struck out five over three innings to collect the win.

Benson ends the season with a 1-18 record.
