UNION CITY — The Union City Charger varsity baseball team kept their name in the running for a potential shot at a Big 8 championship with a two game sweep over Concord on Tuesday night, winning by scores of 10-3 and 7-5.

Game one of the doubleheader saw Union City jump out to an early lead they would never relinquish, taking the 10-3 victory. Union City started out the scoring with three runs in the first inning, one in the second and three in the fourth to build a 7-0 lead.

Concord finally got on the board in the fifth inning only to see the Chargers answer with a run in the fifth and two in the sixth. Concord tried to make things interesting with two runs in the seventh but it was far too little too late as Union City took the 10-3 win. Union City out hit Concord to the tune of 12-4, with Concord committing five fielding errors to Union City’s two.

Kyle Johnson took the win on the mound for Union City after throwing five and two-thirds of an inning in the start, allowing three hits and one unearned run with four walks and 10 strikeouts.

Wade Hoffman came in to pitch in relief, throwing one inning and a third with one hit and two unearned runs. Hoffman walked one batter and struck out another.

Phoenix Elkins had a big day at the plate for Union City, recording two singles with five Rbis and a run scored.

Wade Hoffman also had a big game, finishing 3 for 4 with three singles, three RBIs and two runs scored.

Also adding to the Charger game one win was Kyle Johnson with a single and a double with three runs scored; Ryan Zweng with two singles, a walk, an RBI and a run scored; Jakob Fosmore with a single and a run scored; Owen Jackson with a single; Tyler Wagley with a single and a walk; and Alex Hull with two runs scored.

Game two of the doubleheader saw Union City build what seemed to be a comfortable 7-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh inning. Concord had other ideas however and put up three runs of their own to close the score to 7-5. The Charger defense held tough however and preserved the win as Union City completed the sweep with the 7-5 victory. Both teams knocked out 10 hits in the closely contested match up.

Ryan Zweng took the win on the mound for Union City after throwing five innings and a third, allowing seven hits and two runs, one earned, with three walks and nine strikeouts.

Owen Jackson came in to pitch in relief, throwing one and two-thirds of an inning, allowing three hits and three runs with two walks.

Ryan Zweng led the Charger offense, going 3 for 4 with three singles, an RBI and a run scored while Wade Hoffman added another two singles, a walk, two Rbis and a run scored.

Also adding to the Union City effort was Kyle Johnson with a triple, a walk, an RBI and two runs scored; Phoenix Elkins with a double and a walk; Rick Austin with a single; Jakob Fosmore with a single, an RBI and two runs scored; and Tyler Wagley with a deep double, two Rbis and a run scored.

With the two game sweep the Union City Chargers improve to 10-4 on the season. The Chargers will next see action Thursday when they travel to Homer to complete their Big 8 battle that was postponed due to weather last week.
