Basilica closes amid concern for protests to Supreme Court ruling

Concern over protests in reaction to the Supreme Court's decision to overturn Roe v. Wade led the Catholic Church to temporarily close the Basilica of the Assumption in downtown Baltimore, a church spokeswoman told 11 News. The Baltimore Basilica is the first Roman Catholic cathedral built in the United States. The archdiocese said it is trying to take precautions as people in Maryland and across the country react to the high court's decision. While on a pilgrimage in Germany, Baltimore Archbishop William Lori called the court's decision on abortion rights both a victory and a challenge.
