BASKETBALL: Mason Punchers stun Goldthwaite in 29-2A
Mason High School beat Goldthwaite 38-22 in a District 29-2A boys basketball game Friday in Mason.
Mason, which came into the game with as many games played as Goldthwaite had won, held off an Eagle surge of 14 points in the third quarter, surviving to hand the district leader its first loss in league play.
The Punchers improved to 9-9 overall and 4-3 in district play. Goldthwaite fell to 15-11, 7-1.
Mason led 13-2 at halftime after holding the Eagles to 1-of-17 shooting. Goldthwaite had seven first-half turnovers.
The Punchers led 4-0 after the first quarter and outscored the Eagles 9-2 in the second. The home team won the fourth quarter 14-6.
Ivan Wofford led Mason with 12 points. He had two 3-point goals and was 2-of-3 from the free-throw line. Brody Comey finished with eight points for the Punchers.
Kaleab Fisher sank 7-of-10 free throws for Mason in the fourth quarter.
Mason travels to Johnson City on Tuesday.
TLCA boys 55, Jim Ned 52
Jaidden Villanueva hit a 3-pointer at the buzzer to lift the Eagles over the Indians in a 6-3A game in Tuscola.
The win avenged an earlier 51-44 loss at home to Jim Ned in the first half of district play.
The Eagles had a 10-point lead late but Jim Ned went on a 10-0 run. The Indians hit a 3-pointer to tie the game at 52-52 with 35 seconds to play, setting the stage for TLCA’s last possession.
Villanueva and Brycen Huffman each scored 16 points for TLCA. Villanueva had four treys while Huffman had two.
Sterling Harding and Luis Casillas each hit a trey in the fourth quarter for TLCA. Casillas and Villanueva both hit two foul shots in the final frame.
TLCA (19-8, 7-2) hosts Clyde on Tuesday.
Christoval boys 74, McCamey 46
Christoval continued its dominance in 7-2A with a road win over the Badgers.
The No. 24 Cougars got 17 points apiece from Josh Fava, Beau Jolly and Jaron Slaton.
Fava, who hit his 1,000th career point in December before a hand injury sidelined him, returned to action on Tuesday as Christoval beat Fort Hancock. But the Cougars had already climbed to a 3-0 district mark. With the return of Fava, the Cougars just got better.
Christoval (19-4, 5-0) hosts Wink to begin the second half of district play on Tuesday. Christoval beat Wink in a road game 66-58 on Jan. 14.
Reagan County boys 87, Compass 13
Reagan County beat Compass in a 5-3A game in Odessa.
Kason Brown paced the Owls with 30 points. He shot 10-of-12 from the free-throw line and had two treys.
Jarrett Brown finished with 15 for Reagan County. He was 5-of-7 from the line and had two treys. A.J. Avalos added 12 for Reagan County and was perfect on two foul shots.
Reagan County led 54-21 at halftime. The Owls (18-11, 6-0) host Crane on Tuesday.
Mason girls 28, Goldthwaite 21
Mason beat Goldthwaite in a District 29-2A game in Mason.
The Cowgirls got out to a 23-10 lead after three quarters. The Lady Eagles outscored Mason 11-5 in the fourth and closed the gap.
Brooke Stockbridge and Lauren Olson each had eight points for Mason, the No. 18 team in the state according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches. Olson had two 3-point goals while Stockbridge finished with one.
Mason (21-8, 8-1) plays at Johnson City on Tuesday.
Ozona girls 38, Fort Hancock 28
Ozona rebounded from a loss on Tuesday with a 38-28 win on the road against Fort Hancock in
After scoring just 14 in the first half, the Lady Lions increased their point production in the second half with 24.
Mia Davidson led Ozona in scoring with nine points while Claire Bean had eight. Ysabelle Flores added six for the Lady Lions.
Ozona (4-2, 15-14) hosts McCamey Tuesday
Robert Lee girls 41, Sterling City 31
Robert Lee held off a challenge from Sterling City in an 11-1A game at home.
Mia Galvan hit four treys for the No. 4 Lady Steers and finished with a team-high 14 points. Braylee Hood added 11.
Payton Conner had a game-high 18 points for Sterling City while Brooklyn Gaines added 10.
Robert Lee (26-2, 7-0) hosts Bronte on Tuesday while Sterling City (18-11, 3-4) travels to Blackwell.
Irion County girls 50, Blackwell 28
Irion County was dominant in a home game in 11-1A.
Melanie Rainey scored 15 points to lead the Lady Hornets while K.K. Hart added 14.
No. 15 Irion County (25-3, 6-1) travels to Water Valley on Tuesday. Blackwell (2-4) hosts Sterling City.
Irion County boys 89, Blackwell 16
Irion County beat Blackwell in a 11-1A game in Mertzon to remain undefeated in league play.
Jordan Harrison scored 25 points to lead four Hornets in double-figure scoring. Trevin Coffell finished with 18 for Irion County while Drin Qerimi had 14. Bo Morrow added 10 for the Hornets, who are ranked No. 10 in the state.
Irion County (22-3, 5-0) travels to Water Valley on Tuesday while Blackwell (0-5) hosts Sterling City.
Menard girls 55, Santa Anna 43
Menard won a 12-1A game at home against Santa Anna.
Jalyn Montes led the Lady Yellow Jackets with 14 points. She also had five rebounds, two blocks, two assists and four steals.
Tatum Ruiz had 12 points and seven steals for Menard while Mackenzie Wagner finished with 10 points, three assists and a steal. Makinley Kothmann had six points, eight rebounds, four assists and five steals.
Menard (7-3) travels to Eden on Tuesday. Santa Anna (4-5) hosts Paint Rock.
Harper girls 73, Center Point 5
Harper won a 29-2A game at home against Center Point.
Rachel Perkins had 19 to lead No. 13 Harper while Carter Wood added 16. Talli Millican scored 13 for Harper while Kylie Wolsey finished with 11.
Harper (23-5, 7-2) hosts Junction on Tuesday.
Sterling City boys 44, Robert Lee 13
Sterling City won a home game in 11-1A.
Johnny Monreal led the Eagles with 12 points while Adan Calderon finished with 10.
Sterling City (13-10, 3-2) travels to Blackwell on Tuesday. Robert Lee (1-4) hosts Bronte.
Miles boys 52, Roscoe 35
Miles beat Roscoe in a 8-2A game at home.
Carson Ellison paced the Bulldogs with 19 points while Hayven Book added 13.
Miles (11-13, 2-3) travels to Coleman on Tuesday while Roscoe (0-5) takes on Forsan at home.
Cornerstone boys 69, Hill Country Christian 28
San Angelo Cornerstone Christian won a TAPPS 1A district game at home against Hill Country Christian School.
David Salas had 17 points to lead the Lions while Colby Mitchell had 14 and Dawson Harris added 10.
Big Spring 83, Lake View boys 22
The Lake View Chiefs dropped a District 3-4A game on the road.
Big Spring improved to 17-11 overall and 4-1 in district. Lake View dropped to 10-15 and 0-5.
The Chiefs travel to Levelland on Tuesday.
Reagan County girls 65, Compass 13
Reagan County got a road win in 5-3A.
Shyan Darr led the Lady Owls with 25 points. Jenni DelaCruz finished with 15 and Glynleah Bishop added 12.
Lindsey Ruiz had six points for Compass.
Reagan County (19-11, 5-3) hosts Crane Tuesday.
Stanton 47, Coahoma girls 39
Stanton knocked off Coahoma in a battle for first place in 5-3A.
The Lady Buffaloes outscored the Bulldogettes 19-13 in the second half to hand Coahoma its first district loss.
Madeleine Mathes scored 27 points for Stanton, whose only district loss was to Coahoma in the first half of district play. Baylor Wright (11) and Hannah Wells (10) were Coahoma’s leading scorers.
Coahoma (7-1, 19-10) travels to Sonora Tuesday.
Stanton 30, Coahoma boys 27
After starting with a scoreless first quarter, Stanton outscored Coahoma the rest of the way to win a 5-3A game in Coahoma.
Jahir Galindo and Ryan Andler each scored five points for the Buffaloes but six others added points to the scorebook.
Billy Bailey led Coahoma with eight points.
Coahoma (3-3, 9-19) travels to Sonora Tuesday.
Big Spring 58, Lake View girls 30
The Lake View Maidens dropped a District 3-4A game on the road against the Lady Steers.
The loss overshadowed a great performance by Lake View's Mikaila Wagner, who scored a game-high 23 points, including five 3-pointers.
Big Spring improved to 17-11 overall and 5-2 in district. Lake View dropped to 5-16 and 1-6.
The Maidens travel to Levelland on Tuesday.
