BASKETBALL: No. 12 Irion County girls stay undefeated in 11-1A

Irion County High School stayed undefeated in District 11-1A girls basketball with a 48-32 win at home against Water Valley Friday.

The Lady Hornets, ranked No. 12 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, improved to 22-2 overall and 3-0 in district play.

Melanie Rainey scored 16 points to lead the Lady Hornets while Audrey Tillman chipped in 11, including two 3-point goals.

Irion County, which was tied with the Lady Cats 16-16 at halftime, outscored Water Valley 32-16 in the second half. Freshman Acelyn Fowler scored seven of her nine total points for the Lady Hornets in Irion County's 18-9 fourth-quarter run that capped the win.

The Lady Hornets hit 12-of-15 free throw attempts for the game.

Emery Sears led Water Valley with 16 points. She had two treys and hit 6-of-7 free throw shots. Kylie Bradley had 10 points.

Irion County travels to Bronte on Tuesday while Water Valley (14-7, 1-2) hosts Sterling City.

Central boys 69, Abilene High 59 (OT)

The San Angelo Central Bobcats held off the Eagles in overtime in a District 2-6A game at home.

Central improved to 17-6 overall and 3-1 in district. The Bobcats are 8-0 at home. Abilene dropped to 8-16 and 1-3.

Raven Ortiz (14), Dre Young (14), Chace Fields (11) and Jaedyn Gipson (11) scored in double digits for the Bobcats.

Central will host Frenship at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Central girls 50, Abilene High 27

The San Angelo Central Lady Cats got back on track with a District 2-6A win at home.

Jewels Perez scored a game-high 16 points and Deandra Allen had 12.

Ariana Trevino and Samia Cooper led Abilene with 11 and seven points, respectively.

Central improved to 18-10 overall and 4-2 in district, while Abilene dropped to 5-22 and 0-6.

The Lady Cats built a 27-8 halftime cushion.

Central hosts district leader Frenship at 6 p.m. Tuesday.

Christoval boys 66, Wink 57

The Cougars got what will probably be a pivotal road win to open 7-2A play.

Christoval dropped both district games last year to Wink, which advanced to the regional finals.

The Cougars also advanced far into the playoffs last year, getting to the regional semifinal round before falling to the same Clarendon team that ended Wink’s season.

Jaron Slaton scored 20 points to lead a balanced attack for the Cougars. Beau Jolly had 18 and Landon Scott finished with 16.

Christoval (15-4, 1-0) travels to Eldorado Tuesday for another tough district road game. Wink (11-9, 0-1) travels to Ozona.

Reagan County girls 58, Crane 25

Reagan County beat Crane in a 5-3A game in Big Lake.

Shyan Darr scored 15 points to lead the Lady Owls while Jenni DelaCruz and Glynleah Bishop each scored 13. Kennedy Roberts added nine.

Karla Montes led Crane with 12 points.

Reagan County jumped out to a 10-point lead in the first quarter and led 32-18 at halftime. The Lady Owls allowed just seven points to Crane the rest of the way.

The Lady Owls (17-9, 3-1) hosts Coahoma on Tuesday.

Levelland 39, Lake View boys 30

The Lake View Chiefs were limited to a seven-man roster, but still managed to put up a strong fight in the District 3-4A opener at Ben Norton gym.

Levelland improved to 7-17 overall and 0-1 in district. Lake View dropped to 10-11 and 0-1.

Tony Cabera and Jayden Mermella led the Chiefs with nine points apiece.

Caleb Salazar and Jerry Haile paced Levelland with 11 and 10 points, respectively.

The Chiefs will shoot for their first district win when they travel to Lubbock Estacado on Tuesday.

Wall girls 36, Ballinger 32

Wall beat Ballinger in a 6-3A game in Ballinger.

The Lady Hawks held a 20-14 halftime lead before a third-quarter run gave them a 31-18 lead going into the fourth quarter.

The Lady Cats outscored Wall 14-5 in the final quarter but could not complete the comeback.

Caroline Holtman led Wall with 10 points while Hannah Burk, Brylyn Watts and Kamryn Williams each scored eight.

Mikaela Gonzalez led Ballinger with nine points while Jenna Battle added eight.

Ballinger (16-10, 3-4) travels to Merkel on Tuesday while Wall (14-9, 5-2) travels to San Angelo TLCA.

Veribest girls 43, Eden 19

Veribest defeated Eden in a 12-1A game to take sole possession of first place in the district standings.

Veribest, ranked No. 16 in the state, denied No. 22 Eden its 20th win of the season. The Lady Falcons led 27-15 at halftime and held the Lady Bulldogs to just four second-half points.

Kennadi Wheeless led Veribest with 17 points while Callie Briley had 10.

Kiara Castleberry had six points for Eden.

The Lady Falcons (15-6, 5-0) travel to Menard on Tuesday while Eden (19-5, 4-1) is open.

Miles girls 60, Coleman 44

Miles beat Coleman in an 8-2A game in Miles.

The Lady Bulldogs outrebounded the Bluekatts 32-10 under Coleman’s basket and had an overall edge of 50 rebounds to just 21 for the visitor.

Regan Smithwick had eight offensive rebounds and eight on the defensive end for Miles and finished with 11 points. Natalie Fernandez led Miles with 13 points while Jessica Hinds had 10.

Miles led 33-22 at halftime and then outscored Coleman 18-10 in the final period to cap the win.

The Lady Bulldogs (13-2, 2-1) host Forsan on Tuesday while Coleman (8-20, 1-2) hosts Colorado City.

Irion County boys 46, Water Valley 36

In a battle between two Top 25 teams, Irion County came out on top in an 11-1A game in Mertzon.

Irion County, ranked No. 9, led the No. 16 Wildcats 29-13 at halftime and survived a rally. It was the district opener for both teams.

Drin Qerimi led the Hornets with 13 points while Eli Davis finished with 12. Trevin Coffell had nine points for Irion County.

Water Valley’s Nathan Treadaway led all scorers with 16 points while Josiah Padilla had eight points and Gabriel Smith added seven.

Irion County (18-3, 1-0) travels to Bronte Tuesday while Water Valley (12-9, 0-1) hopes to rebound at home against Sterling City.

Reagan County boys 89, Crane 26

Reagan County got a dominant win at home in 5-3A play against Crane.

The Owls (14-11, 2-0) were by four in double-figure scoring.

Kason Brown had 20 while Jarrett Brown added 17. Raymond Saldibar scored 16 while Elijah Gonzalez finished with 10.

The Owls led 40-11 at halftime. They host Coahoma on Tuesday.

Sterling City boys 66, Blackwell 17

Sterling City dominated Blackwell in an 11-1A game at home.

Johnny Monreal led the Eagles with 24 points while Damian Calderon added 17. Adan Calderon finished with 11 for the Eagles.

Blackwell was led by Kyler Cummings, who had eight points.

The Eagles led 44-11 at halftime and allowed just six points in the second half.

Sterling City (11-8, 1-0) travels to Water Valley on Tuesday while Blackwell (0-1) travels to Robert Lee.

Harper girls 47, Goldthwaite 44

Harper kept its win streak alive in District 29-2A with a road win over Goldthwaite.

Harper, ranked No. 17, has won the last four since falling to San Saba in the second district game of the season, and are now in a tie with Mason and San Saba atop the district standings.

Talli Millican led the Ladyhorns with 17 points while Kylie Wolsey finished with 15. Rachel Perkins added nine for Harper.

Harper (21-4, 5-1) travels to Johnson City on Tuesday, which represents the start of the second half of district play. No. 23 Goldthwaite (18-9, 3-3) hosts San Saba.

Ozona girls 40, McCamey 14

Ozona beat McCamey in a 7-2A game on the road.

Mia Davidson led the Lady Lions with seven points while Alondra Garza and Raelee Garza each chipped in seven.

The Lady Lions (12-13, 2-1) host Wink on Tuesday.

Coleman boys 61, Miles 57

Coleman outlasted the Bulldogs in the 8-2A opener in Miles.

The Bluecats broke open a halftime tie (32-32) with a run to start the third quarter. The Bulldogs climbed back within one point before a Devinar Roberson 3-point goal stopped the rally.

Coleman made eight free throws in the fourth quarter, including a 4-of-4 mark by Roberson.

Braxton Smith led Coleman with 30 points. He had four treys. Roberson finished with 11, seven coming in the fourth quarter.

Hayven Book led the Bulldogs with 28 points. Carson Ellison finished with 16, including two treys.

Miles (9-11, 0-1) hosts Forsan on Tuesday while Coleman (11-9, 1-0) travels to Colorado City.

San Saba boys 43, Mason 39

San Saba stayed undefeated in 29-2A with a road win against the Punchers.

Reagan Mejia scored 16 points to lead the Dillos while Noah Martinez chipped in 12.

San Saba (12-7, 4-0) plays at Goldthwaite on Tuesday while Mason (6-9, 1-3) hosts Center Point.

Sterling City girls 51, Blackwell 40

Sterling City beat Blackwell in an 11-1A game at home.

Payton Conner led the Lady Eagles with 19 points while Mia Garcia finished with 11. Brooklyn Gaines added nine.

Tori Campos led Blackwell with 15 while Kinley Cummings had eight.

Sterling City (16-9, 1-2) goes to Water Valley Tuesday. Blackwell (1-2) travels to Robert Lee.

Levelland 69, Lake View girls 18

The Lake View Maidens dropped a 3-4A game at Ben Norton gym.

Levelland improved to 21-1 overall and 3-0 in district, while Lake View dropped to 4-13 and 1-2.

Lake View travels to Lubbock Estacado on Tuesday.
