BASKETBALL: No. 24 Christoval boys remain unblemished in 7-2A

The No. 24 Christoval High School boys basketball team knocked off Fort Hancock 86-70 in a District 7-2A showdown Tuesday in Christoval.

Christoval improved to 18-4 overall and 4-0 in district. Fort Hancock dropped to 11-10 and 2-2.

Josh Fava (23), Jaron Slaton (19), Beau Jolly (11) and Ketcher Joiner (11) scored in double digits for the Cougars.

Fava recently was released to play after injuring his left hand earlier in the season.

Christoval travels to McCamey on Friday.

Wall boys 61, Merkel 27

The Wall Hawks flexed their muscles in District 6-3A play at home.

Jacob Felger made six 3-pointers to lead Wall with 20 points and Everson Armstrong had 19, including three from long range.

Wall improved to 16-10 overall and 7-1 in district. Merkel dropped to 14-8 and 5-3.

The Hawks travel to Grape Creek on Friday.

San Saba girls 44, Harper 27

San Saba was dominant in a District 29-2A win on the road.

With the win, the No. 19 Lady Dillos separated themselves a bit from the No. 13 Ladyhorns for the district title. Harper had pulled into a tie with the Dillos after falling to San Saba in the first half of district play.

The Ladyhorns were actually a half-game back of San Saba after an open date Jan. 18 but could have split the season series with a win on their home court.

Instead, the Lady Dillos jumped out to a 20-4 first-quarter lead and then poured it on again in the third quarter, holding Harper scoreless for 7.5 minutes in the third quarter to take a 39-11 lead going into the fourth.

Lexy Amthor led San Saba (24-6, 8-1) in scoring with 15 points while Nojemi Martinez had nine.

Rachel Perkins had nine for Harper (22-5, 6-2).

San Saba has an open date Friday. Harper travels to Center Point.

Merkel 41, Wall girls 39

Merkel rallied to beat the Lady Hawks in a 6-3A game in Wall.

Trailing 31-28 going into the fourth quarter, the Lady Badgers outscored Wall 13-8 in the fourth to escape with the win.

Wall held a narrow 13-11 lead after the first quarter and extended that lead by one heading into halftime. The teams battled to a 10-10 tie in the third quarter.

Merkel got a boost from Kyleigh Mauldin and Alyssa O’Malley, who combined for all 13 fourth-quarter points. O’Malley had seven, including a trey, while Mauldin had six. Mauldin finished with 12 points total.

Kamryn Williams had 11 to lead the Lady Hawks while Hannah Burk finished with eight. She had two treys and was 2-of-2 from the free throw line. Four of Burk’s total were in the fourth. Claire Fuchs also added a trey in the fourth for the Lady Hawks.

Wall (16-10, 7-3) travels to Grape Creek on Friday.

Reagan County boys 58, Stanton 27

The Owls overwhelmed the Buffaloes in a District 5-3A contest in Big Lake.

Reagan County improved to 17-10 overall and 5-0 in district. Stanton dropped to 2-3 in district.

Kason Brown and Jarrett Brown scored 16 points apiece for the Owls. Kason Brown had 2 3-pointers.

Reagan County travels to Compass Academy on Friday. Stanton hosts Coahoma.

Stanton girls 46, Reagan County 37

The Lady Buffaloes won a District 5-3A showdown in Big Lake.

Stanton improved to 21-6 overall and 6-1 in district. Reagan County dropped to 18-11 overall and 4-3.

Madeleine Mathes scored a game-high 25 points for Stanton and Ashley Hill added 12.

Shyan Darr (12) and Jenni Delacruz scored in double digits for the Lady Owls.

Stanton hosts Coahoma on Friday. Reagan County travels to Compass Academy.

Jim Ned boys 65, Ballinger 40

The Indians rolled past the Bearcats in a District 6-3A contest in Ballinger.

Jim Ned improved to 19-9 overall and 7-1 in district. Ballinger dropped to 9-17 and 1-7.

Xavier Wishert (13), Carter Lange (11) and Nate Nunez (10) led Jim Ned in scoring.

Martin Quiroga and Kyle Bullard scored 12 apiece for Ballinger.

Jim Ned hosts TLCA on Friday. Ballinger travels to Clyde.

Jim Ned girls 49, Ballinger 34

The Lady Indians topped the Lady Bearcats in a 6-3A game in Ballinger.

Ashlynn Galvin led Jim Ned with 17 points and Lexi Wishert had 10.

Addison Martin scored a team-high 14 points for the Lady Bearcats.

Jim Ned is now 26-1 overall and 10-0 in district. Ballinger is 17-12 and 4-6.

Jim Ned hosts TLCA on Friday. Ballinger travels to Clyde.

San Angelo Central girls 46, Midland High 34

Deandra Allen and Layla Young combined for 35 points, as the San Angelo Central Lady Cats won a 2-6A game at Babe Didrikson gym.

Allen scored 20 points and Young had 15.

Central improved to 20-11 overall and 6-3 in district. Midland dropped to 5-19 and 1-7.

The Lady Cats have an open date Friday before traveling to Odessa Permian on Tuesday, Feb. 1.

San Angelo Central boys 82, Midland High 49

The San Angelo Central Bobcats rolled past the Bulldogs in District 2-6A action at Babe Didrikson gym.

Kollin Allbright (15), Branden Campbell (12), Joseph Rowe-Pearce (12) and Jacob English (11) scored in double digits for the Bobcats.

The Bobcats connected on 9 3-pointers, including two each by Jaedyn Gipson, Campbell and Rowe-Pearce,

Central improved to 18-8 overall and 4-3 in district. Midland dropped to 8-16 and 0-7.

The Bobcats will be off on Friday before facing Odessa Permian on the road on Tuesday, Feb. 1.

Sweetwater 67, Lake View boys 53

Despite getting 23 points from Tony Cabrera, the Lake View Chiefs came up short again in a 3-4A game at Ben Norton gym.

Juan Perez also scored in double digits for the Chiefs with 14.

Sweetwater improved to 16-11 overall and 2-3 in district. Lake View dropped to 10-14 and 0-4.

The Chiefs travel to Big Spring on Friday.

Sweetwater 32, Lake View girls 29

The Lake View Maidens came up just short in a District 3-4A contest at Ben Norton gym.

Sweetwater improved to 1-21 overall and 1-6 in district. Lake View dropped to 5-15 and 1-5.

Mikaila Wagner and Alexis Williams had eight points apiece for Lake View.

The Maidens travel to Big Spring on Friday.

Clyde 58, Brady boys 52

Brady came up short in a District 5-3A game at home.

It was the first time the entire Brady varsity has been all together and healthy since the second week of December, according to Bulldog head coach Chris Wienecke.

Brady led 35-34 at halftime but Clyde outscored the home Bulldogs 24-17 in the second half to secure the win.

Brayden Garza led Brady with 13 points while Joseph Calderon had nine. D.J. Powell had six points and seven rebounds.

Brady (2-7 in district) plays Merkel on Friday.

Coleman boys 69, Roscoe 36

Coleman ran past Roscoe in a 8-2A game in Coleman.

Braxton Smith led Coleman in scoring with 15 points while Devinar Roberson and Jadin Jackson each added 13 points for the Bluecats, who improved to 11-12, 2-2.

Robert Lee girls 48, Water Valley 29

Robert Lee continued its win streak in 11-1A.

Braylee Hood scored 23 to lead the Lady Steers. She had five treys. Paige Immel added 11.

Emery Sears scored 12 to lead Water Valley while Emily Crawford had nine.

Robert Lee (25-2, 6-0) is ranked No. 4 in the state.

Water Valley boys 52, Robert Lee 14

Water Valley blistered Robert Lee to keep its winning streak alive in 11-1A.

Gabriel Smith led the Wildcats with 14 points, who have not lost in district since opening with a loss to district leader Irion County.

Water Valley (15-8, 3-1) is ranked No. 16 in the state.

Irion County boys 53, Sterling City 33

The Irion County Hornets stayed undefeated in 11-1A.

Trevin Coffell led the Hornets with 22 points while Jordan Harrison finished with 16. Harrison had four treys. Brendan Akingbolagun added 10 points for Irion County.

Johnny Monreal had 10 points for Sterling City while Damian Calderon added nine.

The Hornets, ranked No. 10 in the state, improved to 21-3, 4-0. Sterling City fell to 12-10, 2-2.

San Saba boys 69, Harper 36

Reagan Mejia scored 22 points to pace the Armadillos over the Longhorns in a 29-2A battle in Harper.

Levi Glover had 13 points for San Saba while Noah Martinez and Drake Bryant scored nine and eight points, respectively.

Braden Strickland scored 10 for Harper.

Cornerstone boys 66, Lady Living Rock 30

San Angelo Cornerstone Christian beat Lady Living Rock in a TAPPS 1A district game at home.

Payton White scored 21 points to lead the Lions while Braylon Rios finished with 19.

Cornerstone girls 63, Lady Living Rock 4

Cornerstone won the girls game as well.

Ariel Vega led the defending TAPPS 1A state champ Lady Lions with 14 points.

Grace DeLaughter and Alyssa each finished with 10 for Cornerstone.
