BASKETBALL: No. 4 Robert Lee girls dominant in first-place battle with No. 12 Irion County

Robert Lee High School took a big step in securing its second-consecutive district championship in girls basketball with a home win Friday against Irion County.

The Lady Steers beat the Lady Hornets 45-25 in a battle between two teams in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches Top 25 rankings for Class 1A.

No. 4 Robert Lee strengthened its hold on the District 11-1A crown with a dominant defensive performance, holding No. 12 Irion County’s leading scorer under 10 points.

Braylee Hood led Robert Lee with 18 points. Kailey Freeman finished with 13.

Irion County was led by Melanie Rainey (9) and Katie Casey (7).

The Lady Steers improved to 24-2 overall and 5-0 in district play while the Lady Hornets fell to 23-3, 4-1. Robert Lee hosts Water Valley Tuesday to start the second half. Irion County travels to Sterling City.

Odessa High 54, San Angelo Central boys 52

The San Angelo Central Bobcats dropped a heartbreaker on the road in a 2-6A showdown.

Odessa improved to 21-5 overall and 5-1 in district. Central dropped to 17-8 and 3-3.

Branden Campbell scored a team-high 20 points for Central.

The Bobcats will host Midland High at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday at Babe Didrikson gym.

San Angelo Central girls 41, Odessa High 29

The San Angelo Central High School girls basketball team got back on the winning track on the road in 2-6A action.

Central improved to 19-11 overall and 5-3 in district. Odessa dropped to 15-14 and 4-4.

Deandra Allen and Delaney Hester paced the Lady Cats with 12 and eight points, respectively.

Central is scheduled to host Midland High at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Babe Didrikson gym.

Veribest girls 66, Paint Rock 9

Veribest beat Paint Rock in a road game to remain undefeated in District 12-1A.

Emily Ward led the Lady Falcons with 16 points while Callie Briley had 12 and Kennadi Wheeless finished with 10.

Veribest hit six 3-point goals, the first of which came in the first quarter when the Lady Falcons got off to a 21-5 lead.

The No. 15 Lady Falcons (16-7, 8-0) are open Tuesday.

Wall girls 74, Brady 36

Wall beat Brady in a home District 6-3A game.

Emily Shiller led a balanced scoring attack for the Lady Hawks. She scored 13. Brylyn Watts added 11 while Kamryn Williams put up 10. Caroline Holtman had nine.

Nina Delafuente (11) and Abigail Torrez (11) were the top scorers for the Lady Bulldogs.

Wall (16-9, 7-2) hosts Merkel on Tuesday while Brady (13-12, 2-7) travels to Clyde.

Coahoma girls 62, Compass 18

Coahoma beat Compass to remain undefeated in 5-3A.

Katelyn Johnson scored 19 points to lead the Bulldogettes. She had two treys.

Shae Lang added 12 for Coahoma (18-9, 6-0), which hosts Crane on Tuesday.

Reagan County girls 68, Sonora 35

Shyan Darr had seven 3-point goals and finished with 27 points as Reagan County beat Sonora in a 5-3A game in Big Lake.

Kennedy Roberts scored 15 for Reagan County and had three treys while Jenni DelaCruz popped in one trey in her 15-point effort.

Montse Delafuente and Jessie Adame each had nine point for the Lady Broncos.

Reagan County (18-10, 4-2) hosts Stanton on Tuesday while Sonora (5-22, 1-5) travels to Compass.

Ozona girls 48, Christoval 41

Ozona picked up a huge road win to get back into the District 7-2A race, knocking off first-place Christoval.

The Lady Lions jumped out to a 15-8 first quarter lead. The hit 9-of-10 free throws after that to take a 26-17 halftime lead.

Christoval cut the lead to 33-28 going into the fourth quarter but Ozona hung on by getting 15 points from six different scorers down the stretch.

Raelee Garza led all scorers with 12 points for Ozona. Christoval’s Madyson George had 11.

Kallie Montalvo added 10 for Christoval. Mia Davidson and Charli Oglesby each had eight for Ozona.

Ozona (14-13, 4-1) travels to Eldorado for another big game on Tuesday while Christoval (12-12, 4-1) hosts Fort Hancock.

Irion County boys 82, Robert Lee 11

Irion County dominated in an 11-1A road game.

The No. 9 Hornets had four players in double-figure scoring.

Trevin Coffell led the way with 21 points while Drink Qerimi had 15. Brendan Akingbolagun had 14 while Parker Conner and Bo Morrow each scored 12.

Irion County (20-3, 3-0) travels to Sterling City on Tuesday while Robert Lee (1-2 in district) hosts Water Valley.

Sterling City girls 56, Bronte 28

Sterling City picked up an 11-1A win at home.

The Lady Eagles jumped out to a 17-5 lead in the first quarter and poured on 20 more in the second to take 37-9 halftime lead.

Mia Garcia led Sterling City with 18 points while Payton Conner had 12.

Emily Jackson had 13 to lead Bronte.

Sterling City (18-9, 3-2) hosts Irion County on Tuesday while Bronte stays on the road and goes to Blackwell.

Snyder 61, Lake View boys 36

The Lake View Chiefs came up short in their quest for the first 3-4A win of the season with a loss against the Tigers at Ben Norton gym.

Tony Cabrera and Juan Perez led the Chiefs with 12 points apiece.

Snyder improved to 9-14 overall and 1-2 in district, while Lake View dropped to 10-13 and 0-3.

Lake View will host Sweetwater at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday.

Snyder 59, Lake View girls 21

The Lake View girls dropped a 3-4A game against the Lady Tigers at Ben Norton gym.

Snyder improved to 15-13 overall and 2-3 in district. Lake View dropped to 4-15 and 1-4.

The Maidens will host Sweetwater at 6:15 p.m. Tuesday.

San Saba girls 63, Johnson City 18

San Saba’s Landri Glover passed the 1,000-point scoring milestone with 12 points in a 29-2A game at home.

Madison Shahan also had 12 for the Lady Dillos while Lexy Amthor scored 10.

No. 21 San Saba jumped out to a 38-4 halftime lead and cruised from there. Glover had four field goals and was perfect in four free-throw attempts.

San Saba (23-6, 7-1) travels to Harper on Tuesday.

Wall boys 85, Brady 25

Wall unleashed a barrage of long-range shots to down Brady in a 6-3A game at the Hawks’ gym.

The Hawks hit 15 3-point goals, with five coming from Augden Hallmark. He scored 19 to lead Wall.

Jacob Felger and Jack Duncan each had three treys. Felger finished with 11 points while Duncan had nine.

Everson Armstrong, who finished with 11 points, had a trey. Ryan Dusek, Justin Allen and Caleb Davis each had a three-pointer for the Hawks.

Wall (15-10, 6-1) hosts Merkel on Tuesday.

Ballinger boys 42, Grape Creek 35

Ballinger outlasted Grape Creek in a road game in 6-3A.

Andrew Delgado scored 17 to lead the Bearcats while Devon Molina added 14.

Wyatt Moyer scored 10 points to lead the Eagles.

Grape Creek (4-14, 0-7) travels to San Angelo TLCA Tuesday while Ballinger (9-16, 1-6) hosts Jim Ned.

Christoval boys 78, Ozona 33

Christoval kept its win streak alive in a 7-2A home game.

Jaron Slaton scored 30 points to lead the Cougars while Sevastian Salinas added 21.

Christoval (17-4, 3-0) hosts Fort Hancock on Tuesday. Ozona (5-16, 1-2) travels to Eldorado.

San Saba boys 63, Johnson City 31

San Saba bounced back from its first 29-2A loss with a big win at home against the Eagles.

Reagan Mejia had 26 points to pace the Dillos while Dylan Ware had 20.

San Saba (13-8, 5-1) travels to Harper on Tuesday.

Sterling City boys 42, Bronte 23

Sterling City beat Bronte in an 11-1A game at home.

Damian Calderon led the Eagles with 18 points. Johnny Monreal scored 12 while Rowdy Ferguson chipped in 10.

Kolson Follis scored 12 to lead the Longhorns.

Sterling City (12-9, 2-1) hosts Irion County Tuesday. Bronte (12-12, 1-2) travels to Blackwell.

Coahoma boys 67, Compass 47

Coahoma beat Compass Academy in a 5-3A game in Odessa.

Devon Bennett led the Bulldogs with 21 points. He had four treys.

Raheem Ashford (13) and Ryan Shifflett (9) added to Coahoma’s total.

Coahoma (9-17, 3-1) hosts Crane on Tuesday.

Cornerstone boys 80, Atonement 35

The San Angelo Cornerstone Christian boys beat San Antonio Atonement in a TAPPS 1A district game.

Braylon Rios led the Lions with 25 points while Colby Mitchell added 18. Payton White (13) and Dawson Harris (13) also added to the Cornerstone total.
